Joust Resotration

Right now I want to take this ostrich by the wings and cut its head off! Ill figure something out. Its to bad because the yellow really takes your focus off of the garbage base coast lol

This is how all my projects turn out. Take my time, try to do everything right and screw it all up in the finishing lol Good times...

So when I lay the next color on what should I do to stop this from happening again? Wait longer before taking the stencil off maybe?

Not to rub it in, but I had similar issues with using latex as the stencil layer, and that's why I'd only use oil-based or lacquer for this in the future. Good luck. If it looks like you're gonna break your neck correcting the issue, might cut your losses and save time by trying to get a replacement stencil, sand it down, 2 more coats of base, then spray the stencil layers using RustOleum rattle cans. 1st coat a fine mist that doesn't even cover. Wait 10 min. 2nd coat, thin, but full wet coat. You MUST spray thin coats or it WILL run and make hard edges at the stencil. Wait 10 min. 3rd coat, thin, another full wet coat. If the color is still uneven, you may need a 4th thin coat. If the color is now opaque STOP. Too much just makes it look like ass. Have to remember that the factory finishes were often thin enough in the stencil areas that you could see woodgrain and they just covered. No need to try to improve the look, just strive to replicate the process.

I agree with joey here- I think the latex is the problem.

This is rustoleum rattle cans. I'm just going for it.

Keep in mind that the oil based will spray a bit thin and it very prone to run. Believe me, I screwed up a few times before I figured out latex isn't good for this, thin coats are best, and minimal paint is better than a thick coat in the stencil areas. This isn't a protective finish like for handrails, it's art. Here's a link to my Stargate project and I typed some more tips in there-

http://forums.arcade-museum.com/showthread.php?t=160029

I did all latex on my Robotron and while it's VERY good, I didn't feel like I nailed it like on the Stargate. There was some peeling around edges when the stencil came up that I had to touch up and it just wasn't as smooth in the red and blue. I used quart can Regal Red for the base on the Stargate then rattle can Sun Yellow and Gloss Black for the stencil areas. No regrets.

You shoulda tried this when all the colored layers were on one sheet. Man did that suck:

And I used oil over oil.

Ok that sucked! Thats why I took the stencil off when I did instead of letting it dry. I think I just took it off a bit to early. I only waited 30 minutes because when I felt the paint that was sprayed on the stencil it was tacky. The paint inside the stencil was thicker especially on the lower edge and thats where problem was. I think I just need to let it dry longer but not to long or it will chip. Luckily the next coat will cover up most of my mistakes. Ok lets see what happens pictures coming in a bit. Ill look for any other advice before I pull the trigger though so bbl

Honestly, I pull them immediately after the last coat is sprayed for that color. Immediately. Not 5 minutes, not 10, not 30. After I am done spraying, I start peeling the stencil from one edge or the other, then carefully pull to the paint edge and keep going til it's all off. The only scary part is if you rip the stencil and the remaining piece tries to fall back on your paint.

That's what I did on my MW stencils job too- pulled immediately. I did have a rip and it did fall on a sprayed part- which sucks. I quickly repainted the small area, but you can still see it.

:( damn bro.....
take a break, or a breather and get back on it later with a fresh attempt at doing it.
Sorry you are not having any luck or fun, but when its all done your gonna be glad it was done right.

Turned out just as bad and the stencil wrinkled some of the yellow paint. Now its officially fu#$@d.

How long did you wait until applying the stencil over the fresh paint?

With oil based, I waited a week between paint/stencil/paint/stencil/paint.

I think the direction on the can said 24hrs and I waited 28. It didnt effect 99% of the paint just two small areas... maybe I can touch them up. Im going to wait a lot longer before I spray again though. Im going to work on something else in the mean time.

After 24hrs, it might be safe to handle or touch, but I don't think it's long enough for the stress of the adhesive vinyl being stuck to it and removed. Also, before spraying a base coat, you want to make sure that primer coat has been lightly sanded or scuffed with a 3M green or grey pad, so the paint will better "bite" to it.

I did the yellow color on the other side. This time instead of waiting 10 minutes between coats I waited about 3-5. As soon as I was done with the last coast I started peeling the stencil off and it was looking pretty much perfect until the stencil ripped and fell on my base coat.

I also had a problem with the stencil lifting mid way through painting that side that I never had on the others. This one was wrinkled quite a bit out of the cardboard roll it was stuffed into. I dunno if that had anything to do with it but the next layer is even more wrinkled than this one. Another weird thing was paint showing up 3 inches or more away from any opening in the stencil. I have no idea how that could have happened unless there were cuts in the top somehow. I did notice a few hairs between the middle layer and the top layer of the stencil and thats what these look like tiny tiny hairs of paint. At this point none of this maters though cause I have a lot of cleaning up to do.

I made progress on the control panel though. I used that metal I bought and countersunk the bolts into the top. Then I welded the bolts in so I basically have studs on the bottom. Hopefully ill have some pics to share later.

Ok so originally my plan was to go with mame and do 6 buttons. Then I started feeling like I should find Joust controls and boards and make it a Joust again but after all the paint woes and imperfections I cant justify that. So heres the current state of my Joust Fighter 2.

Damn, so far looking real good. I'm sure there is a way you can touch it all up and have it finished. No?

Have to admit, it's strange looking at a six button Joust CP. :D
