Couple questions. I have new Happ joysticks are the shafts in joysticks all the same size? If I bought Joust replacement sticks somewhere would they fit? Does anyone know where I can get matching sticks and buttons in the light blue light yellow colors?

Joust sticks are completely different then Happ joysticks. Joust came from the factory with a non-commmon two way joystick. The only other game that came with those sticks were Defender and Stargate. The ball and shaft are smaller then normal sticks.

Pics of two-way stick (all I can find at the moment....):

After looking at control panel pics I figured they probably wouldnt be compatible. Thanks for the info you just saved me some time and money :) I think I finally found a solution too.

Did some stuff on my day off.

Wish I would have given this stripper a shot before i sanded through the other side. I think if I was careful enough I could have easily brought back the original side art.
I thought putting the casters on would keep the bottom edges off the ground and the bondo safe. I dunno how I will ever level it though. Hopefully I can get more finished tomorrow :)

I see what you mean. But taking your time and doing it from scratch is going to make this restoration project that much more fun. Being patient and not cutting corners is the key. The feeling you will get once you start stenciling the side art will probably be priceless. There are a few outstanding joust threads here. I would love to restore a joust cab just to do it.

Don't. Most, if not all, are drugged-out whores.

Oh, wait. What?

Nice work so far! Your best bet on the joysticks is to find some used ones from someone on this board. Put up a WTB thread,

Im using the Rustoleum satin black spray cans on the front and im not to happy with the paint. I kinda screwed up I guess but I let it dry for 4hrs thinking it was going to be ready for some sanding but it wasnt even close to dry. Im having to wait overnight before I touch it. I dunno if its the humidity or what but that seems kinda weird. For the coin door Im using Rusoleum hammer finish and that stuff is awesome. It came out perfect and was dry to the touch in no time. Heres the current state:

Actually I have a couple questions too. I got the paint codes off of gamestencils for the brown base color in semi-gloss interior latex. I am going to roll that on since I dont have anyway to spray it. The roller leaves a slight texture and I was planning on sanding it with 400grit paper between coats so Im hoping I can put the base coat down with no issues. Gamestencils says to spray it and the mention not to use a roller so I wont be able to use the valspar colors they recommend for the stencil since I cant spray them. Does anyone know if there are valspar or other spray colors that I can substitute?

Is it possible that the satin black was old? I've had a few cans of rustoleum that wouldn't dry. The only thing i could figure out, is it was a either a bad batch, or old.

I bought them from Home Depot so I couldn't imagine that they are that old. I got it finished just took a few days :)

Spraying is definitely better for both, but I rolled my base coat and used rattle cans for the colors this past weekend with no problems:

I would think you could find similiar spray paint colors.. head to a home
depot.. They have a crazy amount of colors in spray paint.

Did you use an oil base or latex? If latex I wouldn't use a spray paint over it.
Oil paint and latex dont mix.

You can roll a stencil.. its not ideal but its possible. You'll get a better finish spraying however.

Yea Ive seen your thread and yours looks awesome! I just wish you would have used the Joust colors instead of Joust 2 so I could copy you ;) Do you know of anyone that did the same thing as you but with the Joust colors? Otherwise Im either going to have to do the best I can with what they have at Lowes or roll it on.

Well I got the base color from http://www.gamestencils.com/index.php?sc_page=41 the Joust brown, interior latex. The plan was to roll all of it since the paint codes are already figured out, no guessing. Only problem is I have no way of spraying the colors. So is the enamel paint they sell at homedepot lowes etc oil based then?

I'm pretty sure Krylon makes a latex spray paint. Just take your paint colors in and match them by eye to the Krylon caps. You might have to go to a local hardware store or Ace Hardware to get odd colors.

Most spray paints are oil based enamels. Make sure you try it on a test
board before ruining your base coat. Kryon does sell the H20 brand which is
water based but I havent seen it in the variety of colors the oil based come in.

I am doing the original joust colors on my restore but I am using lacquer
paints sprayed on.

FWIW, I have sprayed oil based spray paint/stencil over a latex base coat and it came out great. My trick was to wipe the cabinet with naptha, put the stencil on, after getting the stencil firmly stuck, use a 3M scuff pad to scuff the exposed areas. It shouldn't mess up the vinyl stencil material if you're careful, if anything, it should burnish it so that it's stuck better. This will help the next layer to "bite" to the base coat. Be sure to wipe everything again with naptha to degrease it so that you avoid any fisheyes.

So I brushed a coat of base color onto a 2x4 and sprayed it with a bunch of different cans I had in the garage. Why exactly is it bad to spray oil based paint on latex and what happens when you do? Im going to let it dry and see what it looks like in the morning.

Oil on top of latex should be fine. Latex on top of oil probably wouldn't adhere well, unless the surface was very roughed up.
