Joust problems

whenever you buy a joust/robotron and similar williams games of that era...rebuild the power supply, replace the power headers and connectors, ribbon cables and do the 4164 upgrade. then report back.

good day.

he's right, you know. :)

4164 is optional though, you can get by with the original ram. I always do the scoresaves trace mod for that, never adapters... forget the adapter plugging the board in someplace else and kiss that new ram good bye.

is there a place to buy that ram that doesn't cost an arm and a leg now?

I'll also say, the sockets aren't the greatest on these boards. I often wash them with simple green because that's seemingly the most effective way to clean them. the pins inside can break or corrode as well, but it's in my personal experience that the legs for the chips with single wipe sockets need to be as straight as you can get them or you'll have contact issues.

your 1-3-1 error might not be power related, it can also be caused by the decoder 4 chip near the CPU. remove the chip evenly, straighten legs as necessary -- if you have contact cleaner, spray that in the socket too. seat the chip thoroughly, then try again. that decoder goes to the ram circuit, if it's missing or not firing all the way you'll get the catastrophic ram failure code.

the rest of the upgrades/mods should be done regardless, but there's about 20 different ways to get a 1-3-1, and power isn't always one of them.
