Joust power supply repair needed

Yellowdog and iirc Dokert rebuild these as well as a few other members, then there's always the option of a standard switching power supply.

switching power supply is a cruddy option for all those williams boards. I wasted over a year messing with that option and problems didn't go away until going with a rebuilt linear.

oh i fully support the rebuild of the original, so many recommend the switcher i figured i'd throw it in there as an option. Personally I had 2 original linears rebuilt by a local member with new headers and all after i found my original with many wires soldered directly to the bottom side. I love the original stuff and honestly it's bulletproof now along with my spare (which hopefully will go in a future williams cab).

I agree. The linear is a bit of trouble to work on, but in the long run, it is the solution that works best with the Williams games.

Bob Roberts sells a rebuild kit, or you can get one of the referenced KLOV folks to do it. If you aren't good soldering, take the KLOV option - having the right tools makes the job easy. Trying to do this with the wrong tools can damage the board, and give you new headaches you don't need.

I never had any issues running WMS stuff on switchers...done it for years.

At any rate, rebuilding ther linear reg board is fine...but don't forget there may also be burned connectors on the harness that will need replacing or else you'll not be in much better shape. Burned header connectors are classic WMS failures.

I think anyone rebuilding a Williams power supply should replace the molex headers on the PCB with new, then replace the corresponding IDC connectors with crimp pins (trifurcon if you got em) and new housings. Usually some of the pins are dark or look bad, so replacing the connectors is a real good idea.

Right. Yea Trifurcons are a great way to keep the connectors from burning again. WMS used those round header pins and I always thought that was kinda dumb. You get less contact area with a flat surface mating to a round one and overheating *will* happen with a high current situation. They shoulda at least used the square pins...that would have increased the life some.
