Just got in and installed a Joust joystick rebuild from arcadeshop.com

MAJOR improvement! Be warned, though - the stick feels so new and different (if yours was pretty sloppy), that it takes some getting used to. But WAY for the better.

Also got the Midway logo plate (Gold) for a coin door. It's just got a really sticky adhesive on the back and goes on rock solid. Looks awesome!

Topped off the order with some new leaf switches for spares. $3 each and exactly what you'd want.

So...major kudos to arcadeshop!

I have a Pac Man joystick centering grommet coming in from Bob Roberts - can't wait to get that installed as this stick is major sloppy right now.

Out of curiosity, did you rebuild both joysticks, or just the P1? My P1 was very sloppy prior to the rebuild, but the P2 was actually fine. I agree, the kit makes a world of difference. My scores even improved after installing it and adjusting the leafs a bit.

I, too, just did P1. P2 is pretty good on mine, but I'm so impressed with the rebuild I might go ahead and do P2. But I think first I'll do Defender! :)

The kit from arcadeshop is just for a single joystick right? What all comes in the kit - just what's shown in the picture? Any other info or photos you have would be good .. I've been meaning to do this for awhile (I've actually gotten complaints at parties about my sticky or sloppy joysticks)

These won't fit in the Joust cocktail will they ?

I've been told that the cocktail sticks have a smaller base
to squeeze into the smaller CP space.

Can anyone confirm that ?

...or let me know where I can find a set of Joust cocktail sticks.

Thanks,
Steph

They will not fit the Joust Cocktail, I can confirm that. They are completely different. I can't tell you where to get a set of sticks, though. I had to buy an entire Defender cocktail that was damaged in a fire to get a pair of sticks.

Hey LeChuck - yep I got exactly what was in the photo. So I just used existing hardware (screws), and for now I didn't even replace the leaf switches as the existing are still in pretty good shape after cleaning. I'll just have them as spares.

Again, pretty dramatic difference - it truly feels brand new!

Here is a tip for the cheap joust or defender owner..

Wrap some tape around the shaft below the dust plate. It will make a world of difference! This works for joust cocktails too! Best part, it's almost free and no one knows you did it.. Cause it's hidden. Heh

Thanks for the info. Not exactly cheap to do both joysticks, but I guess I'll suck it up and do it since I have gotten complaints (mainly P2 sticking).

Yep not cheap but on the plus side....not cheap - i.e. pretty rugged parts that should last a good while. I could see on the old assembly where the metal had worn around the moving parts, creating the slop. But I bet BITD, that thing got banged around for many hours.

Williams cocktail joysticks are a unique design. Unfortunately, one that has never been reproduced. The only source are other Williams cocktails. Joust, Stargate, Defender and Moon Patrol.

A better solution is to measure the od of the shaft and go to a hobby store and buy a brass tube that will just barely fit over it. This will reduce the sloppiness and will last a long time in home use.

You can also help the wear on the shaft by using a small amount of white lithium grease to lubricate the holes where the pivot shafts go through to help prevent further wear.
