I just swapped out boards on a Joust... The monitor was blowing the fuse so I swapped it out with another one for now. It boots, everything works besides the control panel which is dead. The bulbs by the start buttons are on, everything is hooked up, I never unhooked it in the first place, but none of the buttons or sticks work. I tried swapping out the little board, no change. Any ideas?

Thanks.

Holy crap Casey... I can not believe your luck!!! :(

The controls were fine when I swapped in John's spare CPU and Sound boards(all the other boards were yours).

Check the simple stupid things like the control panel harness being fully plugged in, no wires have been pulled out of it, no wires have broken at the joysticks or buttons, the I/O widget board has the harness plugged in the correct way, etc. It's *GOT* to be something simple this time around!!! (I'll keep my fingers crossed for you!) :)

Sure seems like it, eh? But I can not find anything amiss.

Bring up the diagnostic screens and go to the switch test. If all of the switches are on, then check to make sure you didn't plug the i/o card cable off by a row. Use a flashlight or something to make sure. It is real easy to do.

Make sure you pushed the control panel connector all the way on. Sometimes they jam up and don't mesh all the way.

With the control panel open and the switch diagnostic page on the screen, run a jumper wire to the power supply board ground and then manually touch the switches. Note whether the corresponding switch message appears on the screen.

Something really weird I just found. If you put two credits in, it starts the game automatically. I didn't notice that because I was only putting one credit in. If you put a ton of credits in, it keeps playing 2 player games after both players die. If you go into diagnostics, on the second page ("game adjustment") it maxes every number out and changes all the options at the bottom to "yes".

So something is shorted open? or?

Here is what the switch test looks like. There is no change when I touch the switches with the ground jumper, there is no change. Is this showing them open or closed?

The control panel connector and the I/O connectors all look good, I undid them and reconnected them both several times testing the jumper to the switches, all with no change on the monitor.

Have you tried disconnecting the wiring harness that goes to the control panel from the I/O card while in test mode? I'm curious if all your stuck switches will clear...

Yes, I actually just tried that. It does not change. I tried unplugging it at the board and the control panel at it's harness.

That's showing they are on, right? I've never done it with a working machine. I'm assuming the name comes up when you close a switch?

Yeah, when you hit a button it shows which button you hit. I recently had the same problem on a Defender machine, it was caused by a bad PIA on the interface board.

update: It does the same thing with my old rom board hooked up.
The good news is that your old ROM board is probably good. If you have an old I/O (aka interface, widget or wedge) board, that's the one to try.

All of the switches are on when no I/O board is attached to the MPU board. It can also occur when the PIA or the buffer chips are bad on the I/O boards.

If you have a logic probe, it is usually not very difficult to determin what is wrong with I/O cards. Just check the schematics and follow the data paths.

I do repair I/O cards as well. PM for details.

I do have a logic probe. I have never used it. About 10 years ago I bought some small Toyota hatchback for $200 that had over 300k on it. This was under the back seat. The car lasted 3 years but I had to get rid of it because you couldn't turn the fan off and in the summer it blew out heat full blast and in the winter it blew out cold full blast. The shocks broke so bad that they shot through the back of the car.. the springs were sticking out in the hatch.

It was a pretty good car for $200. i sold it for $100.

So.. how do I use this logic probe? :)

Update: Jeff stopped in and instantly spotted a broken trace. I will attempt to fix it later, after I do work that brings me income :/

Thanks again, Jeff, you're a champ.

No problem, just glad it was something simple... for once! :)

BUT, I'm confused at how this board was sold as 100% working unless the trace lifted and broke during shipment?

(sorry for the crappy cell phone picture)
