I started playing a Joust I recently got and suddenly while playing, my bird started leaving ghost trails of itself all over. I could still play but pretty soon the screen was full of wherever i had been. I haven't seen the ghost trails since that one time but instead it will randomly reset while playing and the "all systems go" screen appears and you are back at the attraction screen.

Power supply issue? ROM board?

There are a couple of possible issues. The simplist to to would be to carefully reseat all of the cables. While the ROM cable is pulled the connector should be recrimped. Arcade Solution has a good tutorial on how to crimp the connectors. Just skip over the part about cutting the cable and go to the part about pressing the connectors in a vice (http://www.arcadesolution.com/ribbon.html).

Normally leaving ghosting images means that the special chips are not blitting correctly to clean up the images. Since you are seeing the correct images it usually means that the corre commands are not getting to the chips. That is usually the ROM ribbon cable.

If that does not work, you might want to go to the diagnostics and run the RAM test for an hour or two. The power up RAM test will only run two passes and it does not check every bit. Running the diagnostic RAM test for a longer period will increase the chances that every bit will get tested.
