I just picked up a Joust which has been converted to another game. It has woodgrain vinyl covering the sides, paint looks to be intact under the areas I can see.

Is there any way to lift the vinyl off without peeling the paint?
I want to try and preserve the original side art.

This is the original "as purchased" condition

I would try a heat gun in bottom corner and see how it works. There is only brown on the bottom 1/4. If the adhesive is not to strong it should come off easy. If it is old and weathered it's going to be a lot tougher.

My Defender was covered in woodgrain vinyl too and it peeled off revealing beautiful artwork underneath. Mine was not adhered very well, sort of like contact paper. I hope you have as good of luck as I did.

WOW, the heat works fantastic. Started a small corner, little too late to get into it. Can't wait to see the real sides!! I'll snap some pictures along the way.

You should be able to just peel it off. I have done that to a Joust and a Stargate. I documented them somewhere on this site. Both turned out great. The laminate protected the artwork beautifully.

Once you have the laminate off, just pour some GoofOff onto a paper towel and wipe it over the glue. Let it sit for a minute and then rub it with a dry paper towel. The glue will ball up and rub right off without harming the original art. Don't pour the GoofOff directly onto the artwork or it will be damaged but wiping it on and rubbing it off works great.

Definitely post pics.

Peeling away, this had been on the machine since at least 1990 as there was a dated vending sticker. 20 years in hiding!! Felt like asking the knight "dude, can you breathe again??" LOL

Too much heat and the glue stayed on the cabinet, too little and it pulled the paint off.

Got it all done! Now to find the correct color paints for touch up.
A JROK Multi-Williams board is ready to go in!!! (Thanks James!!)
Some repair around the bottom and CP are the biggest jobs left.

Ha, Ha ! I like it !

I wish the vinyl on my Pac Man cabaret came off as easy .....

Look forward to the rest of the project, the artwork looks pretty good underneath.

I got the control panel stripped today. Wow what a pain. Took some advice, used a heat gun, but whoever formulated the adhesive..... Used stripper to take off the majority of it... carb cleaner to do the mop-up. Hated to see the original art under that mess. I am very pleased at the overall condition of the panel.

I've decided to have a new metal plate made with the pattern of the phoenix arcade CPO made. Really nice thing is that I'll route out under the metal and hide the joystick dust covers there.
