powered on my joust cocktail , all seemed fine i started playing then the characters started duplicating, then the game reset carpet pattern and the screen displayed "rom error 1" then displayed factory settings restored all systems go. attract mode screen perfect but when start button pressed same thing happens. now what? simple chip replacement or do i need board repair? (after everything cycles through the digital readout says 0)

Pull ROM 1, clean the legs and put it back in. Make sure all three lights are lit on the PS board. Maybe try flexing the ribbon cable a bit if it won't stop.

It's possible you need a new ROM 1 chip. Make sure you specify red (white with red stripe) or green label if you have to replace it...

There are some fairly standard preliminaries for dealing with these Williams boards, first and foremost, check the potential at the RAM chip corners.

If it were my ROM board, I would not even think twice about that ROM, I would replace it with a new one from HobbyRoms just to be sure. It is just not worth hassling thru the debugging steps with a possibly flaky component.

There are very well described procedures for replacing the ribbon cable on that ROM PCB. Search for and read.

Good luck,

First, are you using the original linear power supply or a switcher? If a switcher, check the voltages while the game is running and check the +5V. If it is above 5.15V turn it down. If it is below 4.8V turn it up.

If you are using a linear PS, the original WIlliams board with the big heat sink next to it, then check the voltages on the RAM chips. Be very careful not to short the pins with the meter probles.

Measure the voltage at the 4 corners of one of the RAM chips.
The voltages should be
Pin 1 = -5V,
Pin 8 = +12V
Pin 9 = +5V
Pin 16 = Ground
The pins are numbered starting in the upper left corner, going counter clockwise.
If any of them are low or are fluctuating more than 0.1 V you need to check your power supply.
