I was going to replace my Journey CPO. It has the normal cracking around the bends but otherwise its pretty nice. I got a nice reproduction CPO but some of the colors are off. Im pretty picky about the way my control panels look, but not sure what to do here? Whatever I do wont be until after it comes back from the Seattle Show.

Here are some pics.

Here are my thoughts - I used a quality B'time reproduction overlay that was made years ago - maybe ArcadeRenovations did it? I can see some slight hints that it will crack eventually and it has been indoors every since then. I'd leave it alone as good as it is.

I'm in the same boat as you ,I purchased the repro and was not happy with it at all, the colors are way off and the original has way better detail then the repro. My original with the cracks on the bend will sit with the machine unless a better one come's out. On the other note I'm happy with the repro side art from This old game , Rich did a great job on that.

From the response it confirms my feelings. Im going to hold off for now. I will keep the original on there for now. I really like my panels mint, but the colors are really messing with me. Dont get me wrong its a nice screened overlay, and im not unhappy with the purchase. If mine was messed up more I would throw it on for sure.

I have the same dilemma with my Timber. Cracking on the edge but overall in good shape. I bought the repro overlay and colors just seem off. I think I'll leave mine as is too. There's something about it being all original that I feel good about too, even if it's not perfect.

I'm in the same boat on my Satan's Hollow CP. My original is in the same shape as your original Journey CPO, and the SH repro CPO's colors are pretty off in the gold areas. I never did replace it and probably never will. Come to think of it, I have the same problem with my Burgertime and Jungle King CPO's. I have the repro for both, but the original is in good enough shape for me not to feel a need to replace them.

Yeah, there's no way I'd replace that... even if the repro was perfect.

I like originals even when they have some character. I only replace when there is a large amount of metal or wood showing through.

I'd replace it.
Do you really want something that looks like that in your arcade? You have the other overlay, use it.

TIP - If you use a heat gun on the bend (lightly, of course) you can avoid the stress cracking. I have successfully done this on the infamous Qbert overlays, works like a charm.

I replace everything I can as I don't dig on the "used" look. If the rest of your games have "character", then leave it. If everything else has been restored, then replace it.

When it comes to light to moderately worn games, original always beats restored (for me).

I'll pay more for a game with a slightly cracked original CP than a game with a restored one. I totally understand restoring a game that's in really bad shape, and I think some restorations come out phenomenally. I've owned restorations. That being said, the original machine in slightly weary condition always beats a fresh restore in my book. I like showing off wear on things I collect; it's part of a story.

You can't rebuild "original". It either is, or it isn't.

It all depends on how much resto work you plan on doing to the rest of the game. PrOk discussed the difficulty in reproducing this ages ago and until the original films surface, it's unlikely that it will ever be printed again as it was pretty much impossible to match dead on to the original. For the record, your original would already be in the landfill if it were mine, the one that i had on my game wasn't nearly as cracked as yours and i still tossed it.

How about building a new CP with the new overlay? That way you can have both orginal and your repo one. It would save a little wear and tear on your orginal one.
