Yea, it came with a loop tape of Separate Ways. I just put in a Journey greatest hits. Here's how you can make your own loop tape.

http://www.instructables.com/id/Make-a-cassette-loop-for-about-6-seconds./

How long is the original Journey loop?

Is this track that we can download from the MAME site accurate? I am in the process of making mine and I just want to make sure. I have an original tape but it doesnt work.

I should also have a soild state replacement for these soon.
which will finally alow it to be in stereo for the first time

The track from the mameworld site is a CD quality reproduction of the original loop tape. The loop tape is a little different from the album version, and the creator took the time to cut and paste the album waveform to match the loop tape. I can't verify that it's accurate since I don't have a loop tape, but if someone went to all that trouble, I would think it's pretty close.

That's awesome Rich. All of us here on the boards are grateful to you for all you do.

I have some loop tapes on their way to my house (ordered online) and I scanned and printed a replacement decal to put on them. Tonight I will verify any questions about the MAME version (since working with editing music is what I do for a living).
I have also slightly disassembled a non-working original tape - and will review it and confirm lengths and edits etc. I should be able to do that within 24 hours. I will follow up with everyone on this thread tomorrow. I'm fairly confident that the MAME version represented in this thread is accurate but I will verify this for sure.

it was also mention at one point when I posted for the SS replacement the orginal track was "live" but never got confirmation from anyone else. My Journey died just prior to the Portland Expo so I need to get it back and up to finish testing. a possible new interface board/MCR amp may also be in the works.
stay tooned...

As I started to read this I was wondering why someone hadn't reproduced those tapes/tape player system for something a little newer and more reliable, as it seems they fail a lot.

That's good to hear Rich, I intend to own a Journey some day, and it's good to know that reliable parts will be available.

if i ever get a journey, if i need a tape fixed ill get a new tape, record the song, then cut out that section of the tape and put it into the original looping tape case

Ok everyone here is the scoop... The version from MAME is correct.

I have been a radio DJ all my life and have mixed and remixed tons and tons of stuff over the years - so this didnt take too long.

First I recorded the track into my computer from the tape... SOUNDED HORRIBLE!!!

The total length of the tape is 3 minutes... then there is a 2 1/2 second pause and the track starts again. The track itself has two major edits (as far as time) They are right in the beginning of the track (16 counts of instrumental is cut out) and then following the first chorus there is another 16 counts cut out.

Office Max sells 6 minute endless loop tapes... I simply doubled the edited track and made it 6 minutes (all digital) and now all I have to do is record it onto the new endless loop tape and put on the label. Done deal.

The first picture is the original tape - the second is some of my replacement labels.

The track is NOT live...

Excuse the rough cell phone pics - the reproduction decal for the tape is pretty much perfect... I intentionally left the yellowish contrast (I like to keep that vintage look)

Unauthorized duplication is a violation of applicable laws. I'm reporting you.

Just kidding, but I'll take a couple labels if you're selling them.

Looks good, just make sure you put a marker of some sort on them so people don't try to pass them off as NOS. I'll take a couple.

That is a must! A super secret "marker" that only those in the "know" know about. Mostly to keep prices down and the turd heads in check.

I can sell these if you guys are seriously interested. I dont want to steal Rich's thunder on this though... He does high quality stuff all around - but this is something that is more my area... its what I do for a living.

For those of you that want them marked - just know the opposite side of the original cassette has a small red sticker that warns not to insert that side of the cassette.

I'm curious if this device could be loaded with other audio and
used in place of some 8-track systems used in the old electro-mechanical
games. I'd be very interested if the cost is reasonable.
Currently, they often switch on a 6VAC line but this can easily
be converted to 9VDC (i built a board already to do this).
What say you, restoration replication master? :)
