Jawhn's New Defender. W00p!

What, no dildos? I'd take it back.

Eric, I specifically told you to keep that to yourself! No, *cough* there were no adult toys in this game when I received it. None. Absolutely zero. Nada. (Whistling, looking at ceiling)

Ok, replaced the 5101 and the 4071, same results. Game boots, goes to Bookkeeping and won't get out of it.

Jawn redid the switches on the coin door and the Sound came back, but the switches don't do anything.

Well, almost nothing. They cause a BUZZing noise in the Speaker. If the Auto/Up is in the DOWN position, you don't hear any buzzing. If it's in the up, you do. If you press the ADV or the HS Reset, then you get buzzing as well.

We traced all the wires out and they seem to go to the right place. However, the harness has been hacked a lot so, we may have missed something.

Tried a different ROM board and got the same results.

All voltages checked out at pretty close to dead on at 5V.

If I disconnect the coin door, and manually ground the ADV switch, it will move forward, but then it will just start scrolling through the values for that option.

Any suggestions?

The buzzing and such sound like a ground problem to me.

If you're having problems with a switch staying stuck and cycling, it may be tied to that ground issue...or something shorting.

I know you said you replaced the batteries already, but did you do the lithium mod? The Defender cocktail that I had had this same problem, stuck in bookeeping mode - replacing the AA's didn't help, but as soon as I installed Bob's lithium upgrade, it started working properly. Must have been a poor connection.

I'd see if anyone has a non hacked up harness for you two to throw in there. Might be as simple as that...crosses fingers.

Well, it should work without any batteries in it at all. What should happen is it will come up with the bookkeeping error, and you would just have to cycle out of it. However after saying that, the batteries are in there, so I'll have to remove them and see if that helps.

until then, I need to get my test bench dialed in for Defender boards.

Brien keeps trying to talk me into this, and I told him I just wanted to put some lithium AAs in there... :D

You think this might work? I know Brien's down for it... Brien, how much does that real lithium battery upgrade cost...?

Also, if anyone has an old Williams coin door, I bought the 3 new switches (Advance // Auto/Manual // High Score) but it only came with the switches... I have no current way to mount them, as someone had swapped those out for a different 3 button set... I'd be interested in a few pieces from that setup.

Uh oh, I'm bleeding. Hang on, lol. (Just put in a very painful continuous blood glucose monitoring infusion set. Ugh. Damn things.)

The mod probably costs less than lithium AA batteries would cost!

And I have like 20 kits, so it would cost even less :)

Ok, got my Test Rig dialed in for Defender boards.

I put the CPU and ROM board on the bench (left everything else off for now as Step 1 is going to be getting out of Bookkeeping Mode).

Turns out the HS Reset line is being held HIGH. Pin 4 on IC24. If I advance to one of the options that allow you to change something (like Function 28), it sits there and just goes through the values for that function.

If I ground Pin 4, it stops. I had to stop at that point, but I think that if I ground that pin, and then do the advanced past 28, it MIGHT get out of Bookkeeping. Will have to give a shot later when I have more time.

GIANT high-five! I am so glad you know how to troubleshoot this kinda stuff. I have to stop buying projects... Thank you so much, Brien!

I have an extra set of switches and bracket you can have Jawhn.
Just pay shipping and they are yours.
PM if you still need them.

PM being sent. Thank you sooooooooooooooooo much!!! *backflip*

Little premature, I'm afraid.

Still can't get out of bookkeeping... grr.

Well, poo. Even after your idea? Sounded like a solution to me, lol.

Anyone else have similar experiences / have an idea?

Possible watchdog issue?

I would think that if the watchdog was an issue, wouldn't the board set keep rebooting? The game is running to the point where it can run through the bookkeeping and allow the changing of settings, so the code has to be running. I'll watch the Watchdog next time I look at it and we'll see if it's barking or not.

I would suspect something along the lines of it can't write something to CMOS, or it can, but what it reads back, makes it think that the settings are corrupt and it needs to go back into book keeping.

It has to be on the CPU side of things as I tried two different ROM boards and got the same results.

James is THE MAN!!! Thank you so much, I got the switch assembly today. You rock beyond words! :D

Oh, and bump for any new ideas on what might be wrong with my machine...?

Glad I could help you out Jawhn.
I just wish I could help with the other problems.
