Hey there,
was wondering if one could splice a jamma harness into a regular orginal arcade harness, say like...pacman for instance? :) If not how do you make a jamma?

thanks,
CP

you can as there are adapters for some of the common cabinets (Pacs, Galaga, Konami, Sega 16, etc.) and they can be made for virtually any cabinet with the correct voltages. the adapters mean you can avoid hacking a harness.

but if you're starting with an empty cabinet it's probably easier to buy a complete JAMMA harness and wire from there. they start at around $10 (though a lot of people dislike the cheap versions) and are pretty simple to install. don't forget though that with most games there are two harnesses: the AC power (to the transformer) and the DC low-voltage (from the transformer to the PCB.)

Bob Roberts has a great tutorial about how to wire this all up.

If your machine has the original Pac-Man wiring, you need something like a JAMMA PCB to Pac-Man Cabinet adaptor. Several sites sell them:
Arcade shop (go down to JAMMA/Conversion Adapters "Ms Pac/Pac Cabinet to JAMMA Adapter"): http://www.arcadeshop.com/parts.htm
JAMMA Boards: http://www.jammaboards.com/store/jamma-pcb-to-pacman-cabinet-adapter/prod_273.html
I have one for my Gaplus cab and it worked great and was really easy to install (took 5 minutes or less) and I didn't have to hack any of the cab wiring.

it says on there that a switching power supply is required and the original harness is not switching?

Sorry, didn't notice that. The Gaplus/Galaga/Bosconian cab adapter (that I have) didn't require one. The old cabs use linear power supplies, not switching. It looks like the one from JAMMA boards has a 4-pin plug for a switching supply to plug into (looks like the same style as used in a PC). Perhaps someone with more experience on Pac cabs can add some additional info on the best way to hook a switcher into the cab without hacking at the wiring.
