Jamma 60-in1 PCB variations. The definitive Guide.

Unfortunately, it's not an instant bootup. The startup sequence on the icade takes about 30 seconds as it loads all the ROM images. My MAME rig, which is painfully outdated at this point (P4 3.0) boots to the MALA front end in just over 20 seconds. And the boot screen looks nicer, too.

What're you running that your MAME boots in 20 seconds? My rig is a 2.8 P4 and honestly it was a bitch for me to get the video card to output the 15 hz signal. That's why I'm wary of a single boot image. I wish it were that easy because I'd snap up another mame rig in a second with a faster mobo.I've got a 1940-in-1 that I scored for a decent price off here and I haven't really played it as much as my MAME. I actually got the 1940-in-1 because I feel like the JPAC has a lag when trying to play fighting games and when my friends and I play MK or street fighter it just doesn't feel right. I was trying to test the xxxx in 1 board because it has a different interface than my MAME machine. We should probably start another thread with discussion though since we're ruining the definitive guide. :-D

I'm using a PC monitor for my setup, so no resolution issues to worry about.

Here's a 3 year old video, when it was "Harleycade"

I've trimmed another 10 seconds off that video since then by disabling another dozen or so windows services that I didn't need.

I flick the power switch around :07 to :10, and by :50 I'm launching a game. So that's just under 40 seconds back then.

Sorry about the glitch when Ms Pac fires up....I had VNC running on the machine, and I accidentally got a remote protocol request during filming *doh*

It's closer to 1:16. Here is a video of the iCade boot.

iCade 60-in-1 rev B booting into game selection menu

iCade 60-in-1rev B - Test and Setup menu

Bringing the board up from power on through all of the configuration menus for each game. Flash configuration is nice, but flipping the test switch 60+ times to walk thorough all the game menus gets a little old.

DigDug on iCade 60-in-1 rev B
Gameplay seems normal and the audio is acceptable, but you can tell there are timing differences. I would rate DugDug "passable" on this board.

Galaga3 on iCade 60-in-1 rev B
I don't recall having ever played Galaga3 before, but the gameplay seemed very rapid, as if it was running at 105%-110% normal.

Mappy on iCade 60-in-1 rev B
Gameplay seems normal and the audio is acceptable, but with only subtle variations in timing from MAME. I would rate Mappy "acceptable" on this board.

Super Cobra on iCade 60-in-1 rev B
Gameplay seems normal, but as you can see I am not a good player. Audio is too loud, with explosions sounding like an amplifier has been driven to it's limits and begun distorting the audio. I would give rate gameplay "acceptable" and audio quality "poor".

Space Panic on iCade 60-in-1 rev B
Gameplay seems normal, but audio is "tinny" as if it is being played through one of those little metal disk piezo speakers in a handheld game. Overall rating - "Fair".

Qix on iCade 60-in-1 rev B
Gameplay seems normal and the audio is acceptable, but with only subtle variations in timing from MAME. I would rate Qix "acceptable" on this board.

PacMan on iCade 60-in-1 rev B
Gameplay seems normal and the audio is acceptable, but with only subtle variations in timing from MAME. I would rate PacMan "acceptable" on this board.

BurgerTime on iCade 60-in-1 rev B
Gameplay seems normal to a little fast, but audio is a little high pitched. Overall rating - "Good-Fair".

Phoenix on iCade 60-in-1 rev B
Timing and gameplay are way off. Rating- "poor"

Zaxxon on iCade 60-in-1 rev B
Gameplay seems fairly normal, but not as smooth as the original. Joysticks seems to have been remapped from 45°, which is nice. Audio is noticeably altered, but not "bad". I would rate Zaxxon "fair" on this board.

Galaga on iCade 60-in-1 rev B
Gameplay seems normal and the audio is acceptable, but with only subtle variations in timing from MAME. I would rate Galaga "acceptable" on this board.

You will find that in addition to the INSANELY loud "Static" sounding explosion noise that you hear when you die in Super Cobra, you will experience the SAME noise when you die in either Scramble or Galaxian as well. All of these games should have a similar "death" noise to Galaga. It's hard to imagine how they could manage to get the sound acceptable on Galaga but NOT on these other games. And, as far as I can tell, it has been this way on EVERY SINGLE "iCade" verson, from my old 38 in 1 to the most recent "small" 60 in 1 boards.

What is TRULY sad is that I actually bought a 60 in 1 when they first came out with the HOPE that this had been fixed. To my HORROR, not only was the death/explosion noise still the same, but in Galaxian, the sound that the game makes when you fire a shot was COMPLETELY MISSING! Hell, my 38 in 1 at least produced THAT sound. I hate, Hate, HATE these fucking Chinese boards!!!

Necro Bump. haven't had a lot of time playing galaxian but recently picked up a couple.
Yesterday, picked up a Galaxian cocktail and immediately moved it to my overflow location (brother's house). Set it up, played a few games and found it odd that the missile shot didn't make any noise. We went over to the 60-1 he has and it too didn't make a missile shot noise in Galaxian. I was like, huh, must not have one.

Went home where my recent Galaxian UR has been sitting in garage waiting to be plugged in and loved. Sure enough it has a missile shot. I might not have ever investigated the missing shot further, assuming the 60-1 surely would be missing such a critical sound.

Moral of story. You need a dedicated Galaxian, two are better than one, and 60-1 sucks.

some of the sound problems don't immediately present themselves. for example, start to play Frogger it initially sounds great, but if you progress to the second stage where the cars race by faster, the fast cars make an awful sound.

Also, I think when judging these boards its important to realize the importance of playing in an original cabinet to the experience. i.e. the correct speaker mounted in the correct place relative to the player and more importantly the correct exact joystick mounted in exactly the correct place has a lot to do with the "feel" of the gameplay and the perception of the sound. I can confirm from experience that most of the sound problems are undeniable and have little to do with what i'm talking about, but I can also confirm that I ran separate wires to convert my galaga cocktail in my arcade to boot directly to the galaga game in the 60 in 1 while I was saving up to buy a new board, and I couldn't tell the difference. never had anyone tell me that they had noticed. It looked the same, it played the same (as far as i could tell) and it sounded exactly the same. Galaga is one of the best on the board, so maybe thats not entirely fair, but the point is, put it in a donkey kong cabinet and play the galaga and its going to seem off no matter what you do.
