I just picked up a Super Off Road 2 player cabinet with a Track Pak pcb. The battery is still on the board, no corrosion/leakage thankfully.

I've done a fair amount of searching here on KLOV and I've read alot of conflicting info. Would really like to try and figure this is out definitively.

1.) I understand the PCB will operate without the battery, but I'm assuming that it will not save and game settings (along with user data as well). Is that correct?

2.) If I do need to replace the battery, is this a rechargeable battery and is there a charging circuit that needs to be disabled in some fashion on the board?

What is the easiest/preferred method for doing this and what kind of battery replacement have most used. I've seen TNT videos where they are using a coincell + holder. I've seen comments about using a three cell pinball style holder and mounting it off the PCB.

Would really appreciate any sound advice/pictures/etc. that owners of the game could give.

Thank you!

It's a leaded lithium battery. I can easily change them with the power on.

There are rumors that a dead battery will screw up the track pack board (graphics
Background shifts half way up the screen).

So I wonder what is the smartest move/play here....

I personally haven't seen any of the Leland lithium batteries leak, and all my boards still have them installed. They're not rechargeable.

And I haven't seen any proof of the battery having anything to do with the split screen problem... I've only seen that from a bad EEPROM (and simply replacing it fixes the problem).

Personally, I'd check the voltage, and check for signs of it leaking/deteriorating... if it's still good, leave it. If it's low or looking bad, pull the battery, and replace it. Any non-rechargeable 3.6V lithium should be fine (the original style Tadiran batteries are expensive).

So mine is clean as whistle. Still reads 3.7V. I'm kinda thinking the same thing here. Maybe I should just leave everything alone. It all works, no sign of problems.
