It's Time for another "Where the Hell is Everybody" Thread.

I have been off and on the forums over the last month or so and have seen an alarming trend. Very little stimulating arcade talk. What's up? Everybody getting out of the hobby? On Vaca? Getting pissed at the way they be runnin' the Chat About Anything section? Hell when there are good arcade-related threads (not to be confused with the drama-filled negative feedback threads that seem to get everyone's attention for a month or more) started they seem to die in about 3 or 4 posts. It would be fun to have a few feel-good arcade threads started again that actually see some participation.

As a side note, I've also noticed a strange trend in the Restoration (showcase) section. Why are people starting resto threads with a pic of a beat cab that they found for $20 and nothing else? I get it, you're showing the 'before' pic and proclaiming to everyone your intentions for a future resto, but don't you think you should be finished with it (or at least get beyond the 'moving the dirty cab from your truck to your garage' stage) before starting a thread? I can't tell you how disappointing it is to see a "Star Wars Upright Restoration" thread and then seeing a beat cab with zero restoration even started yet. Most of those people never even come back to their own thread with updates, so what's the point? Motivation to start? It isn't working.

Anyhoo, seems like there are a lot of people slacking lately. Time to step it up. I need motivation to finish some of these arcade projects in my garage*.

*PS: My TRON has been sitting here for 4+ years and has never even been a complete working machine since I owned it.

I've got at least two cabs that I've been chomping at the bit to get started on. It's just been too cold at night to get any painting done.

Been slammed with work. Not much time for the hobby :(

I'll tell you, had I not bought a garage heater 3 years ago I probably would have given up on the restoration part of this hobby. I hated waiting Winter out. Now I keep moving no matter how frigid it gets outside.

We're sorry, Phet. We'll try harder. For you, buddy.

Personally I just need a garage to go nuts in again. Just set up a secured line of credit the other day so maybe in 6 months or so I can get a mortgage without the words "impending rape" being mentioned somewhere in the fine print. :(

I have been around but its been to cold to work on anything but thats allright, I did get a good score todayyou no if cant work on them atleast I can pick up a few.

I have actually been getting more and more busy with the hobby and posting less and less - not that I was ever a prodigous poster anyway. Just finished up a Cloak and Dagger that needed some work (my grail).

I also put a hold on me buying anymore machines until I finish restoring my Iron Maiden pin I got recently. 80% working right now, playfield looks like it was never played. I love this game.

Preciate that. I know it sounds sappy and whiny, but really, without an active collector community, some of these restorations, custom builds, rare arcade history discoveries and vintage arcade photographs just seem pointless. And no, my wife does not give a shit. In fact, she hates every aspect of this hobby. If not for you guys, no one would 'get it'. I guess I feel like a grade school kid bringing home an Eiffel Tower made out of Popsicle sticks. If mom never notices and Dad never said you did a good job on it, eventually you just hit it with a baseball bat and start using the sticks as surfboards for your GI Joe guys.

I can not express honest my opinion for fear of reprisal...

...but if you ask administration, it's all honkey-dorey here in KLOVville... Greg points to the number of users online as an indicator (among others).

That's your problem with the 'infractions'. You act like I do when my wife won't have sex with me. A wounded little child who can't get beyond the 'woe is me' quotes every 3 minutes. Let it go. Go back to being the fun Fritz I used to know. The more you dwell on it and try to shoot sniper comments at the mods, the more they target you. I have probably said and typed some of the most fucked up shit on this site and have never received an infraction (and barely a warning). Why you ask? Cuz I don't get personal or take it personally. Just let it go and have fun. I can see somebody needs a hug and you know I'm the one to do it. You just have to come within striking distance.

I think this going to turn into a negative thread here in a min. I bought a star wars cockpit 100% working. I posted it but as for feel good there's not a lot of glory in just a outright purchase.

I know people won't agree but I think the Talk About Anything section is probably a culprit.

If you had a Battlezone you could contribute to the Battlezone high score thread.

I think the tech section needs more participation.

I thought the wife was supportive of your hobby? At least the kids are though, right?

Seriously wish I could provide more intriguing restore and gameroom pic threads at least, but until I get a space to set up my extensive array of tools and leave shit sitting around to dry and/or cure all I could really offer is bumps to old resto threads with stuff like, "hey, look, I powder coated this coin door!" or, "Look at this cool repro Atari power brick I installed."

It kills me a little bit inside knowing that I have almost as many projects sitting in storage as I have working game at my place. :(

I should just go post that I bought some shit from RAM or jumble-games or Captain Pinball or something, that always seems to rile folks up. ;) On the other hand the ensuing comments would probably cause an avalanche of temp bans. :/

I dunno about that, recently pretty much anything negative can earn an infraction and if Frizz doesn't watch out he will end up getting a even longer ban again. :(

Rude comments, direct attacks, indirect attacks, saying anything about mods, saying something that gets another member butthurt to the degree that they feel like reporting it, all seems to rack up the points now. Ever since noice was 'driven off' it seems like things have gone a bit crazy.

I wouldn't be surprised if negative comments about Obama in P&R would garner an infraction. :p

I've been unemployed for two long stretches now since Sept 30, 2010, with only a brief 5-week stint separating them, so that has me pretty distracted from the hobby in general. I'd probably participate more in the stimulating arcade talk it it weren't for that. Can't wait to get back to work doing something, anything, as the uncertainty and longer term concerns about money are weighing on me. I have to force myself to stay involved in this hobby because I need it and the friendships that have come out of it, when my natural inclination is to withdraw into my own head while dealing with work/career concerns. I think the economy still sucks for a lot of people, and the related stress is affecting peoples' participation and enjoyment of hobbies like this one. I'm trying to use this hobby to keep me sane amidst all the turmoil.

I'm not into doing restorations myself. I'm more into playing and having people over to play, so for me I just want my games in good working order. I think the restoration work that many of you guys do is amazing, and you do a great service to the hobby in preserving these games for future generations to appreciate.

I'm on five different arcade gaming forums and this one is by far the largest and most active. KLOV has a far greater number of active members and the number of new posts here per day is tough to keep up with even now, so seeing "where the hell is everybody?" is kinda strange to me. That said, I know I've been here only two years, so I probably missed a boom period in activity here from 2001 to 2007 or so? The King of Kong brought me back into this hobby and I was very active on the Twin Galaxies and ClassicArcadeGaming.com forums for 2-3 years, and didn't get around to signing up here until early 2010. Also, I tend to post less than I used to in general. Phet, you've averaged over 15 posts per day here for the last six years, every single day. Considering that your wife "does not give a shit" and "in fact, she hates every aspect of this hobby" I don't know how the hell you could pull off that much activity here without her killing you. :D I practically live on my computer and can't imagine keeping up here and posting 15 times a day every day for even a few months, and I've had nothing but time on my hands for most of the last 16 months.

Get to work on that Tron! Nothing nicer than a freshly restored one of those.

Kids love it, wife just hates the time and space that I have to devote to it. I really like having the games but I understand her frustration with the space they take up. As to the Noice thing, I haven't paid attention to any of his threads in at least 4 years or so. I guess I never got anything out of his nonsense and really never cared to try. I did notice that he left the boards once before for about a year and nobody seemed to care then. Actually, you fell off the face of the boards too for a while there as well. Don't think I've missed a day since I joined. I check the 'new posts' list at least once if not 10 times a day. Fucking iPhone. Also see:

Fucking work computer. Fucking iPad. Fucking home computer.
