It Worked! Actually converted a turbo outrun pcb back to Outrun!

Maybe it's been done before, but all my searches turned up dead ends. So I had to try. And we did it! We successfully converted a turbo outrun pcb back to outrun.

I had a working turbo outrun pcb, with the Hitachi battery , mask roms and all. I really just wanted to see if it could be done. I replaced the Hitachi with a vanilla 68000, made jumpers and cut others, and 55 burned chips! FIFTY FIVE burnt chips!!! But it works. It is possible to do. It would even be possible to make pins for the jumper wires to fit on so it could be switched back and forth. As long as you either have original mask roms, or a burned set that had everything split up properly... like I got from my man Joe! Joe3693 The best chip man in the business! Ask any questions, I'd be glad to answer, maybe not tonight, but I'll answer!

Oh, it's not that bad. Most of those are the 27256 versions of the MASKROM data and you can easily and quickly use the Winbond 27c512 EEPROMs you buy for less than $1 each on eBay.

Just sayin'…

I am kind of surprised you were able with only eproms.
i did mine last year and the difficulty was with the video board where the original ROM were 1 meg in a 28 pins chips. There are no replacement eprom ic for that. It works but some graphics were missing. i had to replace also the prom associated with the addressing, basically doubling the number of eproms to 16 in that section. It is possible that the original prom works with 256k eproms but not with 512k Or you board was not originally populated with the 1 meg roms
 
BTW, the Outrun game in the first post is missing the right road, I would start with double checking the OPR-10185 or 10186 (they are actually identical).

The original 315-5227 IC that handles the object data can handle either 1Mbit or 256kbit ROMs, by the R3 jumper on the video board (unpopulated is for 1Mbit, 0 Ohm for 256kbit).

The Outrun manual shows you which object data ROMs need to be used and where on the video board they need to be placed, either for the common 1Mbit MASKROM version, or the less common 256kbit version.

When converting to Outrun, it is much easier to use the 256kbit ROMs. There is a way to make 1Mbit 28pin MASKROMs using a custom carrier pcb and a TSOP 1MBit EEPROM (I have done it but it is not a pleasant process). The 512kbit route is more involved too.

Thanks Paris for the details. I went the 512k route with the prom. If i would have known, i would have saved a few $$.
