I was moving a stack of them from one storage unit to another... I set them down, on edge, and as soon as they touched the ground the one closest to me... a plain glass with some black borders... simply exploded into a bazillion pieces. There were pieces 20 feet away! Several small cuts on my hand was the worst of it but it was LOUD.

Why does that happen?

Concrete will do that. Every time that I have to move a glass I always have a rag around that I can throw down on the ground. The problem is the temperature change.

Misnomer... not temperature change but rather elevation change. Tempered glass is extremely fragile on it's ends... a tiny tap on the edge in a single spot will explode the whole glass piece.

EDIT: Already discussed...nevermind.

Geez...at least none of the glass pieces flew into your eyes. And also a good thing it wasn't some hard to find bezel.

Not quite accurate. I once went to a very cold house during winter (empty but for a pinball so no heat on) to pick up the pinball. I removed the glass in order to remove the balls prior to removing the legs. I was holding the glass in my hands when it exploded. It wasn't touching anything. Just the heat of my hands against the cold glass...

i had a pin playfield glass do that once... and heres the kicker.. i took it off, carefuly stood it on edge, walked about 5 seeps away and BOOM all over the place. It didnt fall over, it popped in its upright position.. never had that happen before.

I dropped a wells k7000 25" tube once on its face, it imploded and shat out big chunks of glass! scared the shit out of me let me tell ye.

Temperature changes can shatter tempered glass, but they have to be pretty extreme changes. For example, you never want to stick a hot coffee carafe in icy water - kaboom.

But again, I think this case had everything to do with being placed on the edge as it was. Live and learn...

It definately was not related to temperature. I was moving them from one storage unit to another... a move of about 200 yards.

Must of been the 'setting on edge' thing but that's really weird because I've set them on edge many hundreds of times. There's a variable out there that's unaccounted for but it doesn't really matter.
I'll wear safety goggles from now on when moving them.
;-)

Again, temperature change can be from sitting them on cold concrete. That is something for any unfinished basement owners to remember, concrete can be very cold in the winter compared to everything else, and a BOOM will come from just the resting on the floor. I have never yet lost a piece of glass (knock on wood) but I always put rags on the floor to prevent the concrete temp issue.

Why does that happen?

It was probably internal stress reaching the shattering point created by a combination of the varying temperature throughout the glass with the little bump when you set it down.

Glass can be unpredictable. Several months ago I made some lasagna in a Pyrex dish and set in on the stove. I had taken some out and when to the refrigerator. On the way back and just as I was looking directly at the lasagna dish it exploded. So I had to throw it all out and I was finding glass pieces in the kitchen months later.

Oopsie... another one... damn!

This time... small glass pieces kept popping and hopping around, like Mexican jumping beans, for at least 15 minutes.
Lots of pent up energy of some sort.

That's why it's called "tempered glass", because temperature chagnes make it break! :)

The last time I broke one, I said "good".

That's the last time I have to baby that thing for another 5 years while looking for someone to buy it or the right game to come along for it or forget what I paid for it.

I broke a piece of tempered glass once, was the weirdest feeling. I was moving a real estate display at the local airport (the company I worked for took care of the advertising displays) that had 4 sheets of tempered glass with a rotating house inside. Was taking the glass out so it was lighter and wouldn't break while I was moving it. Set one of the sheets down, and as it set down on the floor, it just shattered right out of my hands. Felt like I was holding onto something that instantly went weightless ;)
