Well I was playing my Bubble Bobble the other day, when all of a sudden the display got sucked into the middle of the screen and turned into a psychedelic Northern Lights kind of image, at which point I ran to the outlet and unplugged it. After a few minutes I plugged it back in to see if I'd get anything, and sure enough the monitor was dead but the game pcb started as normal and played blind. The monitor is a 25" Hantarex MTC 9110 with a fan mounted over the flyback (which didn't turn on when I plugged the game back in, so I don't know if the fan died first and something overheated or whether the fan is supposed to only turn on when the rest of the monitor is working properly...).

Anyway, my question for you experienced folk is: does this sound like a bad cap or something worse? With my limited knowledge and the research I've done, it sounds to me like it could be one of three problems...

-bad cap
-bad flyback
-bad HOT

Is this a common symptom that one of you can pinpoint? Do you think a cap kit will be enough or is there something else I'm missing?

Thanks in advance for your advice.

I had something similar happen on a WG, and it was due to a bad flyback. However, when I powered it up while watching the back, I could see it arcing to the frame. Yours might have blown the fuse, so you wouldn't see that....

I would definitely check the fuses first then if they are OK, verify voltages. If they are OK then visually inspect the chassis for burnt spots, components, etc...

Alright, I did give a cursory glance for any blown fuses, but the problem is that this monitor is in a 3-Koam Z-back cabinet with NO back door so it's just about impossible to accomplish anything here without completely removing it from the cabinet. But if I gotsta, I gotsta, and I'll keep my fingers crossed that it's only a fuse...
