Isolation transformer on Monitor that does not require one

Isolation transformer on Monitor that does not require one

I have a cabinet where the monitor power runs through a isolation transformer, and I am installing a monitor that does not require one.

Can I just plug the monitor in, or do I have to bypass the transformer. I would think it would be fine to just plug it in, but I am not the expert.

You can still use the isolation transformer perfectly fine with your new monitor. It will give you an extra layer of protection.

This is a 27" EYGO monitor that has a ground pin. Where do I connect that? transformers don't have a ground.
 
Most cabinets have ground wires that run throughout the cabinet. In some it is a braided steel cable in others it is a flat yellow ribbbon. Check with your meter to make sure you have continuity to the ground pin on the main power plug.

Hey Ken, so I am hooking this up and the pins are N (ground) L.

What is N and what is L. Does it matter with AC current?

Isolation Transformer == Interference

I hooked up the monitor through the isolation transformer, and I got a rolling interference line in the picture. I bypassed the isolation transformer and the picture looks great.

My suggestion to anyone else, don't use the isolation transformer if the monitor doesn't require it.

That's not entirely true, as others have used replacement monitors using the ISO transformer without problems.

That being said, there are some monitors that don't play nice going through an ISO such as yours. But I'm running a couple newer monitors through the ISO and I don't have any problems. So It's kind a monitor by monitor basis...

Can someone explain the electrical function of an isolation transformer? I get that neutral and hot form a closed loop with a separate ground. But, I don't get why one would be required and how connecting directly to line would cause significant problems.

EDIT: This raises more questions than it answers. For example;

- Why have I never been bitten working on a hot chassis despite touching the chassis indiscriminately? Surely even without a hard ground, sweaty hands should have yielded some hint of voltage present.

- Why does my MK monitor have a ground lead from the chassis to the iso transformer frame? I though grounding the chassis was to help stave off low frequency ripple in the image.

Confused...
