Isn't being a collector and enjoying the hobby enough?

I liked collecting a little more when it was underground. That sure sounds like a hipster thing to say, but in the 90s nobody could be bothered with Ms.Pac or Donkey Kong. Where were all of you then?

Got my first game in 1984, second game in 1993, third in 1995, and it blew out of control in 1997. Happy to say I gave a crap at least part of the 90s, and yes....games were cheap but you still had operators that felt their retired route fodder was worth what they paid originally.

I think the popularity regardless of ego, blogging, resellers, small films, whatever is a good thing because it does allow for the games to have a second chance vs the landfill alternative. Sadly, many ops didn't wait long enough to take advantage of that renaissance.

There are days I look at my games and see them, as Tuckey would say, as boat anchors.

Truth.

There are days (today was one of them) when I ask myself why the hell I'm in this hobby. Moving a 900 lb game into storage with no realistic hope of getting it out soon is pretty discouraging.

For the most part though, I love the games. I'm no high score achiever, and I don't own one pristine resto. I'm no celebrity in the scene nor would I want to be. I just like owning and playing the damn things whenever I please.

Although it would be cool, just once perhaps, to have a pretty girl come up to me and say "So, I see you're good at Centipede."

And that all sounds great, but I know I did not get into collecting until 1997 when awareness and financial ability allowed me to participate..

I remember when I was poor (>8000 annual) seeing Tempests and Centipedes in the paper for $75 each... ugh.

ArcadeMaze!

I read this whole thread and just noticed gozer has a picture of a stick figure sporting wood.

I don't mind the look at my new world record posts. Just don't be a dick about it.

You damned World Champions and you big scores stressing these machines to the freaking limit !

These things should be restored until the forever and then stored away in basements and garages only to be talked about in forums .

I guess I just don't "get" the beef. Who cares (other than you it seems)?

Some in this thread are put off by the vain quest for celebrity, while others find it adds spice to the hobby. People are free to do what they want. I was expressing my opinion on the matter, and wondering how those on KLOV felt about the issue.

Grade school ;)

I get what yaggy is saying: the hobby was great in the 90s. The web was in its infancy, operators were still sitting on piles of games, a lot of neat games were being rediscovered, I was living in a huge warehouse back then, etc. Likewise, my feelings about the collection wax and wane.

But, if younger people do not take interest in these games, the hobby dies with us and even more cabinets end up in landfills. :/

I hate to get involved in this discussion but this is where you don't make any sense.

While I might not agree with the so called "self promoters" and high score champions don't you think that they keep the hobby somewhat relevent and bring interest to it for the generation who did not grow up with the Arcades?

Because the games have value in and of themselves. Traveling exhibitions, permanent museum exhibits, permanent classic arcades, annual shows, and the bar/arcade hybrids. All do an excellent job of (re)introducing folks to arcade games. And yes, I think there's a difference between promoting an event like CAX and promoting a personality.

I agree, however, both promote the games and bring attention to the hobby to a certain extent.

Now whether you like the personalities or not is a different story. :D

There's all types of people out there. I don't think it's fair to stereotype the high score people as "alpha males" and the restoration guys as "introverted geeks."

And I don't see the "check out my awesome high score" post as any different than the "check out the awesome game I just got for $50" post or the "check out my awesome restoration" post. Is it bragging or is it just sharing excitment with like minded people, or is it both?

If you have an avatar and a alias that's not your real name you're an "online personality". Everybody is falling somewhere on the specturm. Some people go farther than others.

The one thing I will say is that FUCK THE TRON OWNERS! Those guys are total assholes! Let's fight!!!!

I grew up in the 80's, played the games, and now some of us have the space, money and time to really enjoy putting our own arcade together. The hobby of preserving classic arcade games falls into the same vein as my father collecting classic cars from his generation. You really don't appreciate a classic until you can physically touch it, feel the power as it comes to life. Everytime you flip the switch or turn the ignition on......you are reenergized and transported to your childhood.....I don't want to grow up.....and my wife and friends except me as I am.....a passionate collector and restorer of classic arcade games.....I need a Donkey Kong fix now....;-)
