My wife deals with my sickness like a saint--she's very supportive and enjoys playing Joust, Tempest and now Paperboy, along with the Getaway, on occasion. She'll also play some Satan's Hollow or other games to humor me, tho' she's not as into the others. Here's some advice for enjoying the hobby and maintaining a happy marriage:
1. Spend only your own money on the hobby and don't be cheap on joint bills/needs to make up for it;
2. Have a dedicated area for your games (like a basement or garage) that doesn't take away living space (preferably that was previosly filled with junk that you got rid of to make room--turning wasted space into something used, albeit for games);
3. DON'T leave crap lying around all over the place and keep your gaming and work areas as neat as possible;
4. Help her get into games by buying ones she may have liked as a kid or 2-player simultaneous games (e.g., Joust, Space Duel) that you can both play together (making it count as "quality time" lol);
5. If she uses exercise equipment (treadmill, eliptical, etc.) that you keep in the same area, play your games while she's doing that so you're both in the same space and not taking time away from her (just make sure they aren't on the same circuit); and, most important of all:
6. Marry a woman who is much younger than you (at least 10 years), since they are more likely to have dated home "gamers" of the deadbeat variety in the past, recognize gaming as a legit hobby, think your retro games are cool, and recognize how nice it is to be married to someone with a steady paycheck.
Flowers never hurt either.....
