Is Tron an overhyped POS?

I'll admit that the only part of the game I enjoyed was the light cycle portion (was also my favorite part of the movie as a kid). I thought all the other "mini-games" were enh.

I think the total delivery of the art and sound, however, is the shit. I love the sound, most of the in-game art and the cabinet art/design decisions. I realize the stick was used on other games, but Tron is what I always associate that design with.

If all I cared about was gameplay I wouldn't collect these things..... The game is about atmosphere and presence. I was awestruck by it when I was a little kid, that's why I own one today...Along with the EDOT.

personally I like tron. Now DOT on the other hand I never cared too much for. Although the EDOT is awesome solely for the environmental aspect.

I love Tron. It's easily in my top 10, and probably in my top 3 or 5. Once you get the hang of it, it's a blast.

I am the exact opposite, love DOT not much love for Tron (haven't played it much though).

Both are killer cabs especially EDOT which I remember playin at a movie theater in Bremerton, WA.

Let's try this thread for a couple hundred responses and when we're done with this one, i'll start a new thread. This machine actually saw the absolute least amount of play in my gameroom.

I hate to admit it but yeah. Mine also gets the least plays out of anything down here.

At the time, this game was dope man but alot of better stuff came right alog after it..

Its one of thiose games that looks bada$$, but gameplay kind of lacks behind.

However iirc it was the first game to be kind of like 4 games in one if that makes any sense.

Nah, I've got one called "Lazarian" midway did a few years earlier that's 4 games. It's worse than Tron, though, lol.

Donkey Kong is 4 completely different 'games' pretty much. Plus it's 4 times as fun as Tron.

Ah, Tron. Probably one of the best looking cabs ever - the blacklight really makes it so. The Lighted blue joystick. The surrounding landscape over the monitor. This one is a real looker, and the look alone makes you want to own it.

The game is less so. Remember back in the day - having 4 boards (individual games) was unheard of. That was very impressive for its time. Sadly, there is no depth, and replay for me just doesnt last long. I have had no desire to own one, just for this reason. If i had the room though, i would get one just for the cab.

Discs of Tron - now that game is AMAZING both in looks department (the environmental standup) and game play. I remember it from 82 - 83 - playing it in the Time out at the mall - I really enjoyed it. Play on on MAME and the darn thing still holds up.

Sad that i did not get one when i had the chance.

i enjoy tron a lot myself. it's a lot of fun to play especially after the recognizer levels start. i would say it is overhyped, in the same light. it is one of the first movie based games, or the other way around, after all.

+1

can any of you guys that think it sucks get more than 30,000?

I'll be the first to admit i'm not very good at Tron, although i repair a ton of them. Here's my take on it.
First, its probably the most iconic arcade cabinet ever made. There's more artwork on a tron cab than most any other 3 cabs combined. The black lights just make it even cooler. I can remember when i saw one in the arcade being blown away by the cab itself. Plus, like most other people, i like the light cycles.
Now, about the gameplay, its different than most other games of the era with the 4 parts to each level. Second, its a pattern game. It gets really hard, really quick. Which is how arcade games were meant to be. You get your 2 minutes or so of gameplay, and thats it, unless your a good player or lucky, or both. Another neat facet is that it encourages you to continue by the fact its a pattern game, give it another quarter, learn another pattern, get a little better. Rinse and repeat.

At any rate, if your not the type who likes to learn patterns, chances are, you will think it sucks. If that appeals to you, you'll love it. Is it overhyped? Not imho, the cab alone makes it worth all the hype. Pricewise, a nice tron should bring good money- just look at the cost of the art alone, not to mention the time and effort to restore one.
