Is Tron an overhyped POS?

I like playing it quite a bit. As mentioned, it really starts moving after a few levels. Love the Reconizer waves! It's a fun game. It is pretty hard to play for lots of folks if you ask me. Which can take away from the appeal for some. If you cannot shoot fast the MCP will take you down without mercy.

I've played it in MAME and it didn't appeal to me at all.
MAME doesn't do it justice, because you don't have the spinner in your left hand and the joystick with trigger in your right. You still might think it sucks, but you should find a real one and give it a go.

i think the only reason most collectors keep their TRONs around is because they look so good side by side with their DISCS of TRONS.

+1. I like disc of tron. Had it for many years. Had a few trons in the past and sold them. Only reason I have one now, is I got a tron that was nice enough were it did not need restroring.

I do like some parts of tron. For me, its a lot like gorf. 4 mini games that are kind of fun to play, just not very deep..

I first played tron at an extremely well lit YMCA and I loved it from the get go. So it wasn't how it looked in the dark that first attracted me to Tron. Thing sat next to this other POS called Dig Dug that I couldn't stand to play. And I still can't. I have owned one Tron in my life. The cab could be much nicer but I doubt I will ever sell it. I also own one DK that I built from scratch/restored for the most part. It looks very nice. Difference between it and my Tron is I actually enjoy Tron. If you don't like it, you don't like it. But don't blame the game.

Cab looks cool, gameplay didn't "wow" me, as others said I would own one if I got a screamin deal on it but it is not a "grail" to me.

Personally I like the gameplay & I think the cabinet is a piece of art.

+1. What makes Tron any less fun to play than every other classic? It's basic, and you kinda "had to be there" to love it. I guess if I were a great gamer I might feel differently, but I'm just a regular dude that likes to play games.

Blaspheme. Dig Dug is at least twice as good as Tron, they're not even in the same league in my opinion.

i enjoy tron a lot myself. it's a lot of fun to play especially after the recognizer levels start. i would say it is overhyped, in the same light. it is one of the first movie based games, or the other way around, after all.

What does the recognizer levels look like?

I put about as much gameplay onto the one I have now, than I put onto the game when it was making jing on route.

That being said, I think I have about 100 times the cash invested into the artwork than I ever sunk into the coin slot.

Its an interesting game, a fast puzzler. Mine will go on sale after Tron Legacy hits.

If you liked it in the early 80s and was old enough to play it,Then you probably still like.
If not you missed it. It is one of those you had to be there:)

I played Tron quite a bit back in the early 80's when it first came out.. hell, my local arcade even had organized competitions with the Tron machines! To me, it's all about the nostalgia and when I fire my machine up, the sounds/music trigger my younger years, and that's the reason I have my machine.

I really don't think the gameplay is any better/worse than any other machine of the era either.. sure it's a tough game to play, and if you are impatient/don't care to take the time to defeat or master it (like a lot of people did in the 80's), I can see why you would be quickly turned off.. but then again, to me, that applies to any game of the 80's.

I also have a DOT and consider that a better game also.. but Tron fits in for both cabinet looks and gameplay for me...

If you didn't play the game in the 80's and get hooked, I could see why it doesn't jive now.. doesn't make it a turd by any means...

The first time my kids saw a Tron cabinet they were mesmerized and it wasn't even turned on. That tells me the cabinet is a classic.
