Is This Worth Restoring ?

that one is perfect for leaving on the street for a homeless guy to urinate in

Awesome , I feel much better about restoring this .

You know it is a solid cab and I bet a homeless guy would love to sleep in it , kinda like a Condo for him .

Would it be cost effective to restore...probably not.

However, I wouldn't rule out restoring it. I'm just about done turning this into a mint condition Centipede:

Those Atari cabs are usually pretty solid. You could have a real nice looking game in the end if you want to put the effort into it.

But like you said its alot of work removing the black paint and I've never done it before . I don't really like chemicals and the fumes .

That is why I went with the 3M Safest Stripper. NO fumes. Works pretty damn good. Let it sit long enough, and it comes off like butter. Of course now that I say that, I have a pic with a can of Acetone in it. I think I used to finish up the tough stuff.

That 3M Safest Stripper looks pretty good , how its non-toxic and no fumes .

I never noticed before but Centipede and Dig Dug have different coin doors . This cab has the same as Dig Dug and Kangaroo .

So what method did you use to restore that Centipede ?

I have a Dig Dug control panel in EXCELLENT condition that you can have if you are willing to pay shipping.

PM me when you get the paint off that thing and I will send it your way.

I wonder how many of you Bay Area guys have restored games that I put to death when I worked for Ops out there?? I see some of these games you guys post and they seem familiar to me.

Bill, did you ever see that ops warehouse in Santa Clara off of Lafayette? That was where I cut my teeth in this industry! How about Yogi's shop in Campbell? Man that guy was a blast to work for!

Wow Thanks ! That would help big time !

I used the 3M Safest Stripper on my Centipede and on my Dig Dug that were both painted over. Slather it on thick and let it sit for a while (I don't remember how long, go by the instructions). The Atari decals are very durable and I did not lose any color off of them at all. I had 2 thick layers of paint so I used multiple applications. I used the acetone with a paper towel/rag at the end if there were any tough small speck that I didn't get off with the 3M Safest Stripper. The only downfall of these painted over Atari cabs is the the white around the decal can sometimes discolor or absorb some of the paint. My plan is to mask off the artwork and paint the white. I have seen others do this and it turned out pretty nice. Like this: http://www.noroads.com/arcade/digdug/page5.php

FWIW I've used JASCO on Atari games in the past and the side art stayed intact. Of course YMWV... JASCO tears up water based paints in no time! Oil takes a little longer and makes a huge mess.

3M also does nothing for oil based. I tried it on a painted glass bezel...it took years to get my downstairs bathtub clean again...

I'm still off and on stripping my Xevious with 3M. I've had so many projects come and go, that it gets backburnered often since it works.

No problem. I found an almost perfect one in an old warehouse and replaced this one. The one you would be getting is the one pictured here (minus the volcano buttons which I stripped for another project).

There is a tiny bit of the CP material chipped off that can be seen in the lower right corner, but aside from that it is in really good condition. I wasn't really looking to replace it ... I just stumbled ass backwards into a nicer one with an original WICO joystick for my Dig Dug.

Good luck with the paint removal and hit me up via PM when you are ready for this!

I wonder how many of us KLOV folks are here in the Bay Area. I've only been here since 2000 and was at Capcom when the Capcom Arcade shut down.

Interesting fact, Dave Ralston (designer for 720, Cyberball, Rampart etc) was in the Capcom studio at that time. So was Rick Maurer (2600 programmer for Space Invaders.)

Bay Area KLOV party????

I might have a wiring harness for it. I know it's a classic Atari harness, just not sure if it's Centipede, Dig Dug or the like. Anybody know what numbers the wiring harness shows, assuming mine still has that pink tag.

PM me and we'll talk.

Cool !

The wire harness is all hacked up and Jamma . I found some mouse crap in the cab today so it looks like I'm gonna have to pull everything out and clean it really good . So I was thinking I might as well get a new harness if its all coming out anyway .

It isn't a Centipede because of the top angle, coin door, and the extra depth on the front of the game where the monitor is. You can tell it's a Kangaroo or Arabian and not a Dig Dug because the lower back corners are cut. On Dig Dug they are square. I'm not sure how to tell whether it's a Kangaroo or Arabian other than taking off some paint. Most of both of those games got converted.
