My question is...

> Take a tron or galaga cabinet. Make a new one to the exact same dimensions, duplicate it, but instead of using paint for the black, build it with the mdf with the black already on it, so theres no painting involved and you have a nice smooth black finish. I think that would look awesome with that type of finish on the sides for a black cabinet.

Now is this still considered original?

Curious...anyones thoughts?

It's probably not "original" because... it's not original! It would be a very nice reproduction though. To me "original" is an actual cabinet built in the 80s or whatever but I also don't care too much about it. I'd rather build an exact copy from scratch with all new art and stuff then just clean a beat-up cab but..... if you go to the extreme with the clean-up (like bondo, sand, paint, new art, etc. then I like those the best. I don't know... there's a lot of gray area here.

I have an "original" DK cab that was completely empty when I got it - I sanded, painted and got all new everything for it so it looks just like an "original" DK but it's not because I put a computer and MAME inside because the boards are expensive AND it is the only cab in my house on the main floor and I wanted to be able to play a bunch of 4-way, one button vertical games (there are about 30 on there). It looks exactly like a DK and plays like it too so when people ask I just tell them it's an original cabinet that I restored. A lot of people here would probably puke if they read this paragraph though...

I like the concept; sounds like it'd come out good. But no, it's not original.

I'd be pretty mad if a seller tried to spin it as original, too. That's not to say I wouldn't buy a newly-fabricated cabinet, though. :)

I understand what your saying, was curious, just thought that the black laminate would look alot better than the black paint, better clean up, better finish, smooth,etc...

DPTwiz actually tried to use laminate finished wood for cabinets. I have a Galaga that Brett cut out of it. It is alright, but nowhere near original. I actually prefer to paint them (obviously)

To be original it has to be as it came from the factory. If it's been altered by either new wood, new paint,or anything else it's not original.

so your saying is that you can have an original wood cabinet game, but once you touch it with say new art, because the original art was torn or ripped, bad, whatever the case is, unless its nos, then it becomes not original then? if thats correct, then what does it become?

It becomes an original cabinet with reproduction side art. You can spin it a number of different ways but if you make a cabinet using new wood then it's a reproduction. If everything is original except the joystick then it's an original cabinet with a reproduction joystick. Nothing wrong with reproductions. Some reproductions can be better than the originals.

ok, thanks for clearing that up. nothing wrong with originals, not at all, but as I agree with you I have seen some awesome reproductions of original games.

If you want to really get confusing, try dealing with what I stumbled on a few weeks ago. An early 1980's bootleg cabinet that had been originally running a Pac-Man board, then converted over to an early 80's bootleg Galaga.

Sure, it's still a restoration job, but just an oddball all around.
