Ms Pac/Galaga 20 Year -

only has this issue with Galaga --- Ms Pac is good to go. It tends to happen after the game has been on 1-2 hours.

probably your game pcb going bad. you have no heat sinks (two big ones) and everyone i have seen without them don't last long. if your lucky there is a slim chance a rom but either way if you don't get heat sink on that board you will be throwing it away.

I agree with the heat sink idea. I've had to scrap a few of those games since Namco wants so much for the board.

Got a recommendation on what heatshink I should buy?

I guess no one repairs these boards? I poked around and don't see any currently for sale on ebay and the namco parts site doesn't have them.

Something like this would work. Probably wouldnt need the fans but it wouldnt hurt to leave them on.

Get some thermal epoxy to secure the heat sinks. Not thermal paste, but epoxy.

You could probably get away with smaller heat sinks (to reduce the weight strain on the IC's) if you wanted too. Maybe wire a fan blowing over the top of them after you get the heat sinks attached??

No one is going to be able to fix those other than re flowing the devices. That could be the problem but it sounds more like its heat related to me.

So, I found a heatsink rolling around in the bottom of the cab. Apparently it fell off and from the looks of the glue marks there was ever only the one. What do think the chances are the chips haven't been permanently damaged?

If it works when its cold then you are probably fine. I dont know which chip needs the heat sink though. I suppose you could turn it on for a while and see which one gets warmer faster.

Okay, my fingers are crossed on this. I have ordered some thermal adhesive and a second heatsink so I am going to just do both chips. But, it didn't develop this problem until a few months after I got it home. So, I'm thinking the chip that has the glue marks on it is probably the one over heating.

Thanks for all the help!

Update on this:

used arctic silver thermal adhesive to attach the old (cleaned up) heatsink and one new heatsink to the other chip. There is a third chip on the board which I am assuming is the main processor which is raised up a little higher than the other two which I didn't attach a heatsink to. I used the highly scientific method of looking at several pictures and no one else seems to have put one there.... The game has the same behavior. I have also realized after messing with it for a while that it's not a time related thing. Ms Pac plays fine no matter how long I play. Galaga plays fine as long as I never allow the capture ship graphic it kick off. Once it does the garbage is on the screen for the rest of the that level.

Is there any chance that one of the two ROM chips have had an issue? When I touch the two heatsinks even after the game has been on for a while they are not hot to the touch.

I have also pulled and reseated the two ROMs with no luck. Checked the +5 which was a hair under 5v and cleaned up the edge connector with an eraser.

Nothing is helping.

I have burned ROMs before but these two look a bit larger than anything I have laid my hands on in the past. Any idea if it is worth trying or should I just throw in the towel, cut my losses and pick up a new red board?
