A friend just picked this up, something seems off about the player start buttons on the front.

No Such thing. That's a Taito cabinet.
I was wondering. I haven't been able to remember what cabinet the arcade I played this game had it in, but it was a very large screen and a very wide control panel, it was larger than other games around it. Very cool at the time.

Altered beast was this third game I ever bought. I even had it shipped up here from Iowa. Mine came in a generic wood grain cabinet which at the time I thought was dedicated too. I later made it into my multi Sega 16 cabinet, then a multi JAMMA cabinet, then I converted it to Final Fight and sold it. In retrospect, it was one of the better built cabinets I owned and I should've kept it.

I saw your thread from '07 on this multi 16, I guess you did a physical board thing and this isn't some kit with a bunch of system 16 games on it?

Yeah I just swapped in the actual dedicated boards. Then eventually I physically changed the pin out from Sega 16 to JAMMA.

Did you play this cab at an Aladdin's Castle? The Aladdin's Castles in my area years ago converted all their Spy Hunter 2's to Altered Beast.

Whatever it was called at the Deptford Mall. Wasn't Aladin in the Echelon mall?

It was definitely not a spy hunter 2 cabinet, this kinda looked like one of the larger Dynamo cabinets from my hazy memory. Deptford did have a SH2. In fact that great arcade had nearly everything at some point except an EDOT (echelon had this and I, Robot). We had awesome arcades in south jersey!

Yeah I typically see them in a Taito cab or a Robotron cab. Mine in an unidentified cab similar to a robotron, with wood grain decal sides.

Here's a pic of mine. I've seen AB in all kinds of cabs, but for some reason I like the feel of this the best. The Taito cab conversion is my second fav.

Heh. I picked up an AB in a Robotron cab today. I had no idea they had no "real" cab. I just wanted to play Altered Beast! Makes me feel better about my purchase. :D
