I found a purported Qbert locally, but wanted to verify whether or not it is a real Qbert, and not a knockoff. I noticed the board says "Cuit Bird Made In Japan" which obviously raised red flags for me. The electronics are in a cabinet different that the standard Gottlieb cab. Any input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

That looks like the inside of a Centuri/Konami cab and that is definitely not an original Qbert PCB. It should look like this one on Crazy Kong's website. Hope that helps.

Looks exactly like the inside of my Vanguard cabinet including the power supply.
Furthermore, looks like the front bracing has broken loose, big design flaw on these cabinets.
The front has that stepped in kick plate, which has no direct structural support.
So if the cabinet is rocking or sitting funny, be prepared to have to fix that!!

For additional info on the "Cuit Bird" bootleg pcb, especially how to add the knocker and speech function, see http://priglmeier.com/game/?page_id=97

Martin,
Thanks for that link. I did a Google search and did not find anything a few days ago. It is good to know there is some info on it after all. It seems like I have a decision to make. I was hoping to get an original Qbert. However, according to that article, the original Qbert boards need a lot of work. That said, I would only want Qbert if it has the speech and knocker function.

Tekno,
I am hoping to find a Gottlieb cab to install everything into. I missed out on one for $5 (yes, 5 dollars) from an operator a few weeks ago. The guy who bought it has already flipped it, of course.

Thanks for the input.

Yup...time flies....

The funny thing is that the arcade Gods rewarded me for that action......
I've now got a Q*bert shell right in my game room....and it cost me not a penny ! :)

My idea is always trying to help good friends in this hobby. Until now, I have _always_ gotten good things for it in return. Be it getting tips about machines, or free parts, or even this !

The only thing I really need for it is some hardware to run it, preferably one of the multi-mylstar boards....

Well if you have a spare one, send it my way!

I've been trying to regain the 2nd Q*Bert of the pair I paid $120 for back in 1992 (for a friend). The one I still do have fortunately didn't have the battery acid damage and cabinet bumps as so many have now. It needs a monitor cap job pretty bad, but did get the multi-kit installed last winter!

But no spares...... :(

If you ever do, you know where to find me! LOL.

The knocker is overrated. Finally played a machine with a working knocker about a month ago and it seemed more jarring/annoying than anything else.

I suppose I agree with this statement though I hadn't thought about it until now. I do know that I was pissed when I bought the arcadeshop adapter and it didn't have enough power to run the knocker.

Knockers are never overrated........well, OK sometimes.....

I tend to agree. Even though I plaid only one Qbert cab with a a working knocker, it grew pretty old on me quickly. I can imagine I might turn it off but for new players it's a great feature.

For now, I'm begging for one of the Mylstar mutli's to materialize.....

I never knew Q bert even had a knocker until I owned one. Arcades either never had it enabled, it was hard to keep running, or I never noticed or cared.

But I like it and have it enabled all the time on mine. (I guess so purists like me do not think its broken.)
