Is this a Mortal Kombat cabinet? Is it a good buy?

This is right around the corner from me and I'm thinking about picking it up. Can I get your opinions on whether or not you think this would be a good buy? Obviously there is work to be done, but since I already have a dedicated MK2 machine, I would use it as a MAME cabinet. However, I would preserve as much of the original cabinet as possible. Maybe there is some nice sideart hiding under there. I'm going to ask the guy if I can go take a look at it this afternoon. And I'll try to get more details on what exactly is and isn't working. I can't quite tell by how it's worded, but I think the monitor is missing altogether. How much would a monitor replacement cost?

Your thoughts?

Thanks

Not sure on the cabinet.

But, if you have a 1986 Pontiac Fiero, you can take that sideart from the bottom and stick it on the hood...

yes it is a MK 1 cab

No it is not a good buy

I won't even touch a missing 25" monitor cab for more than $50

The working MK2 board alone is worth more than $50. I agree $250 is too high without a monitor, but the board, cab and control panel are worth more than $50. He does say, OBO, so offer him $100 and see what he says. And yes, it does look like an original Mortal Kombat cabinet with the way the front of the cab juts out.

True the board is worth more than $50, if it works. But who knows? There is no screen to test it on. Hell, the controls, wiring, and plastic monitor shroud are worth more than $50, but that's not the point.

To get this cab back to what the op wants, he has to remove the black paint and PRAY that the artwork is under there and in good condition. That's a big gamble. I think that's sort of his main concern, if I read right.

$50 absolute tops.

I would buy it for $50, but higher than that, I personally would wait till something better comes along. Just seems like the buyer really wants it and it may be worth it for him to pay a little bit more. I wouldn't want him to miss out on a deal in his area if they don't come along much, but you are right, it will be a lot of work. With arcade games, everytime I miss out on one or can't get one for whatever reason, another one comes along later in better shape and cheaper. I paid $200 each for my KI2 and MK3 in great working shape, if I had bought right away instead of waiting, I would have paid triple that.

If that thing was working and ready to go it would be a good price. If your going to mame it you can sell off the extra stuff and maybe break even if you get it for less then $100

Actually that cabinet is not an original MK1. That's actually some universal cabinet that Midway used, which is the same style they used for MK1. Unfortunately you won't find any MK1 side art underneath that thing. :(

Well, I think the consensus is that I should offer much less then he's asking and take a pass if he's not willing to come down a lot. I'll let you guys know if anything happens.

If the guy does bite on the cabinet, how much would it cost to get a replacement monitor? And where would be a good place to look? Can you rip apart a standard 25" CRT tv?

I'm not all that eager. I'm just still trying to learn what deals are good and what aren't. And you guys are a wealth of knowledge.

I'm not really sure what else to say but ...that is insanely awesome. That actually motivates me to be more patient.

It is all about what is important to you. I mainly waited because I had nowhere to put the games...still don't, but I couldn't pass up those deals. I am impatient as hell normally, so it was a struggle. The guy seems motivated to get the game out. Offer $50 and see what happens.

How much would a monitor cost me? That may be the deal breaker.

I'd pass unless you could get it for around 80$ . A member that lives in Tampa just sold a nice dedicated fully working mk1 for 250$ and I bought my fully dedicated and working umk3 for 300$, so like I said pass on it, there are better deals to be had, it might take you awhile to find it but you will be glad you did. You can usualy find 25 inch monitors for around 100-150$ if you search around. Just wait for a dedicated to pop because artwork isn't cheap either.

Thanks. I think that's what I'm going to do.

If you'r going to MAME it, I would say offer $150 tops, sell the MKII kit and have a nice cab for practically free afterwards. 25" arcade monitors are NOT cheap, but hell, your talking MAME, buy a large flat panel...

i ussally pick up non working games for 50 bucks tops!!

Funny story, thats what I told the last guy I bought a broken game from. He met me half-way at $75 and I decided to take a chance... this was for a UMK3 in a faded MK cab.... oh, and a zip tie was all that was needed to repair it.
