Is this a good sprayer for cabinets?

That looks like a All-in-One type set up. As a rule I usually shy away from things like that...since they're almost never better than getting the right pieces.
Plus I'd have serious doubt that that thing could generate the amount of consistent pressure you'd need to paint an entire cabinet. Stencils maybe...but a cab?

Here's what I use:
http://www.tcpglobal.com/spraygundepot/tcpgate.aspx

(scroll down) I use the Blue one...It works amazing!

I actually own 2 guns, one for primers and one for paints...it's because I HATE cleaning these things.

I personally thing you're better off grabbing one of these and a cheap Harbor freight compressor.

Good luck.

I personally bought that one from Harbor Freight, and it's worked fine for me repainting two cabs so far. It comes with a couple nozzles, and I had to experiment with finding the right paint consistency, but for someone who doesnt have a powerful air compressor I think it can be a good buy. I think I only paid $60-75 for mine, though, so you might want to hold out for a better price.

You may be better off with an air compressor and a cheap HF gun. Plus, you can use the air compressor for other things (blowing dust out of the cab, power tools, putting air in your tires, etc.)

The harbor freight guns are alright for paint and primers. But after you clean them 2 or three times there worthless because the innards are plastic. Summitracing.com has a really nice devilbiss paint and primer kit for $125. I paint cars for a living and am really happy with the Devilbiss spray guns

decisions....

I do have a crappy little 2 gallon air compressor I use to blow out cabs and inflate backyard stuff over the summer. I don't think it's good for anything above an airbrush.

I have toyed with getting a nice big compressor before but right now I am only planning on painting 3 cabs. Pacman, Stargate & Zoo Keeper. :0)

.....This.

Now I'm curious - I was under the impression that you had to spend upwards of $200 to get a decent enough air compressor for painting use. Is this not the case?

That's supposed to be the minimum size tank you'd need. I've been lucky enough to have relatives that will let me use their air compressor for painting, but if I was going to buy my own, I'd definitely want to get something a little nicer than that "pancake" one. I don't do a ton of cabinet restores so it's really not worth it to me right now, but maybe down the road.

I use the sears Craftsman version of that comp and I've never had any issues.

+1 on that! Devilbliss makes some good stuff for sure.

I paired a car with one of those using rustoleum in can. The paint with this sprayer worked great but you must thin it

That is the one I use also. The nice thing is the quality is way better than the HF gun.
You can change needle and tips for different materials like primer, latex, lacquer clear coats or enamel.
They also require less cfm than the HF guns.

I personally thing you're better off grabbing one of these and a cheap Harbor freight compressor.
I use a craftsman 33 gallon compressor and it works fine.
Get one with enough cfm for your gun and at least a 33 gallon tank.
The bigger the better.

So.....

While I am certain a nice compressor & gravity feed gun would be the best option. I couldn't pass up the harbor freight kit since some of you have had good luck with it too.

Besides, it's normally $130, on sale for $100 and I had a 25% off coupon so total $75. I only need to paint 3 cabs so if it's toast after that I don't really care at $25 per cab cost...

I'll keep you guys posted.

That compressor would probably work but will be pushed to the limit to keep up.
The main thing is cfm. Decide which gun you want and how much cfm is required for that gun.
Then get a compressor capable of producing that amount of cfm.
The TCP guns need 4.2 cfm minimum and that is about the lowest for a full size HVLP I could find.
They are only $40+ shipping, not a bad price at all.
Extra needle and tip sets are around $25. You should only need 1 extra set plus the one that comes with the gun.
I bought the 1.8 gun for priming and the 1.4 needle and tip for base coats.
This gun will last long time joe.:D It can also be rebuilt with available parts.

New toys...

So I returned the plastic harbor freight unit. I do think it would have been fine for the job of 3 cabinets but since it wasn't a ton more for the full set up which I can use on my car too I decided to go for it...

1. 20 gallon husky from home depot $170
2. 4 piece husky air tool kit $70
3. Can liners, filters, air hose $30

Yes I will be buying additional sprayer needles, etc.

Now to learn how to use this stuff!

I hope that compressor can somewhat keep up with that gun.
It requires 6 cfm to properly atomize the paint and the compressor is almost 2 cfm short at 4.3 cfm.
You will need to put a smaller regulator on the hvlp.
What you do is crank up the regulator on the compressor to 90psi and then regulate it down to 25-35psi at the gun depending on the material and viscosity of the material.
Here is a good reference for setting up everything. http://www.stovebolt.com/techtips/hvlp_paintgun_basics.htm

Edit:It looks like the gun runs from 4.2-7.7 cfm so the compressor should work, though it will run constantly.
I have never seen an HVLP gun not use a regulator on the gun itself.

almost painting time...

All my parts are in. The cabinets are stripped and sanded. A little more filler to do and a final sanding.

Getting nervous about the painting but will practice on a lot of scrap beforehand.

In Progress:
Zoo Keeper - 20 in 1 multi board
Pacman - 60 in 1 icade
Stargate - 19 in 1 icade

Completed:
Millipede - 3 in 1 Centipede, Millipede, Missile Command board

PS: All buttons are LEAFs. The ZK is a leaf joystick too. I will swap the other joysticks for leafs as I get them...
