A guy sent this to me in response to a game I have listed on Craigslist.
Is this a scam?

Hi,
I'm willing to pay your asking price for it.I will pay you with
Cashier Check as it's the only way i can pay you at the moment due to
the fact that i am away for a business emergency.I will make
arrangement for the pick-up after you have received payment. If you are
fully okay with my terms kindly reply with your full name, address and
a phone number where i can reach you.so payment can be sent.I dont
mind if you take down the Ad on craigslist and consider it sold to me
as i don't want to lose the sale to other potential buyers. The check
I'm sending will be in excess so it will covers the shipping,as soon
as the check clears your bank you will have to deduct the cost for
your item and give the difference to the mover for the shipping
service . I'm asking you to do this for me because of my tight
schedule at work and I need to finalize this ASAP.
Best Regards.

Thanks.

I would say so. Honestly there is no reason for shady activity on CL so anything that seems out of the ordinary probably is!

One form of it, yes.

I've had many others. One big thing that I've noticed lately when replying to emails.. check where the email was sent from originally and where the "reply" email goes to. Huge difference and one of the easiest ways to see if it's a scam.

^^^ THIS.

Also check the headers for IP addresses. One of them is the originating IP address and it will show you where the person is sending the email from. Or, at least the machine they are bouncing the traffic through.

You'll probably find it's coming from Africa, India, or a former East Bloc country.

Yes. What sometimes happens is:
They send too much money but you cash it
you send the difference back and ship the game
bank figures out the check they sent is fake
you're out hundreds and a game because of some scammer...

looks like a scam. Honestly if it's supposed to be local meet the guy in person and offer to pay him the cash so you can just load the game on the spot.

I don't think it's a scam, you may end up getting a minty Q-Bert out of the deal ;)

If the email contains the word "regards" in the closing then you have about a 95 percent chance that it is a scam, regardless of what else is in the email.

The rest of the email is a copy and paste of the standard cashier's check scam.

Cl scams...

Pretty much any initial contact offering to buy something with no questions, contact info, etc. is a scam. Any the reference cashiers checks, etc. - scam. Any with odd salutations like greetings, dear sir, kindest regards, etc. - scam

You can take a snippet of that response and paste it into a google search. It comes back with several results, hinting that it's been done before.

Nice, keep an eye out for "regards", go it.

Big time scam. If these losers took as much time and effort in looking for work as they do in scamming, they would be loaded.
