So I have a guy that I've done restorations for in the past send me a message, and wants me to do either A DK or a Mario Bros. restore for him this summer. Knowing what he expects, the inside of the machine does not have to be all original, just spotless and low-maintenance (which is good, cause I've got a spare, nearly gutted Street Heat in a decent Nintendo cab... I'll probably put a switcher with Jamma and an ArcadeSD in it (I know, I know... but he wants clean and maintenance free, not original.)

One thing he demands, though, is that the outside looks perfect, close to original, and the monitor must be flawless... No sign of burn, not even a little. In the past, I've always used Vision Pros or Betsons for him...

So my question... Can new 19 monitors be had out there at any price? The guy pays me well, and has the cash to spend, but I don't know what to tell him on price, or if he's gonna have to settle for a rebuild with a TV monitor.

Thanks for any thoughts...

I've seen some brand new 19"ers on ebay. Around $300 shipped. Not sure if they're a reliable brand or not, but they're brand new and the guy seems to have a couple hundred of them.

Rebuild a G07 with new flyback and caps. Swap in a new-ish tube from a TV. There ya go, and it should last a lot longer than the Vision Pros, etc..

I've swapped a bunch of TV tubes into burnt monitors. It is super easy and the results looked awesome. All the games in my arcade look like they have brand-new monitors, 19's and 25's. And I've only been at this for a year, if I can pull it off, anyone can...

I know some places that still have some brand new in the box, but they want like $400 for them...

i think op is concerned the demand for a NIB monitor will cut into his profit margin, the answer is it will. the g07 donor route from a thrift store tv will produce similar results. he wouldnt know the difference if you really clean the g07 chassis board.

THIS.

And you don't RELLY have clean the chassis that much, as most people have no clue what it looks like in the first place. Just rebuild it nice, and make sure the picture looks good...

I actually get the same amount from him, based on hours. I just tell him what the repro parts, ps, harness, etc. cost, and then give him an estimate of my hours. I give him the receipts for parts along with my hours and he pays me... Pays me pretty well for my time and this will be the 5th resto I've done for him over the last few years, so I want him to be happy.

I know that many people comment on the poor quality of the Vision Pro, etc., but for games that are privately owned, are they really run long enough to make a big difference? I've never had one fail (Betson or VP) and I've had some of them for years. Maybe I'm just lucky so far.

Thanks for the comments so far...

-I believe Arcadeshop is out, and will not be getting more.

-I've seen the guy selling on eBay that seems to have a warehouse full, but I think I've read in other threads that these are rebuilds with questionable pictures?

-I'm intrigued by the competitiveproducts.com listing. The prices are really good. Anyone have any experience with Makvision or Kortek? If they are decent, I may pick up a couple of these to have on hand.

-I know an LCD would not be acceptable to him.

-I may go the route of the rebuilt G07 with a swapped tube, although I have no experience doing it, and wouldn't look forward to it. Anyone in the Twin Cities want to do one really clean for a reasonable price?

-I don't know that the $400 price range mentioned above would be a stumbling block, if it gets the guy the monitor he wants... He definitely has the cash, and doesn't mind spending it if he feels it's reasonable.

Knowing what I know, and if I were paying a pro to do the work, I would want the rebuilt G07 with a swapped in tube. From what I read, a lot of the newer monitors just aren't made that well. You can nearly bulletproof the old stuff. Charge him a little for the time it takes you to swap the tube and you're both happy.

Yeah, a lot of people write that but is there actual proof ? I have 2 Korteks and a Korean built "modern" WG running in my games and they look great and have no issues so far. I also love their remote control boards !

I think all the talk about the newer monitors being bad quality is just because of them coming from the far east and is not based on real experience.

As if the US built old one's are trouble free.......I think WG is in my top list of lousy build quality with regards to solderings, construction design and factory hacks etc.

I still have two fresh Korean built WG's on stock luckily. Apart from that, I will always try to fix the original monitors if possible before using these, but it's nice to have some insurance for the future :)

Anyone have any experience with Makvision or Kortek?

Kortek made the Vision Pro (as did a handful of other companies).
Makvision monitors are made by Rodotron/Huai/Cheng Hong/Eygo.....and a ton of other names the Taiwanese company has used.

The only dead chassis I have are an Eygo, and a Korea A-1. Since I cannot find schematics or parts for them they are basically garbage. Since the Eygo is a 12-pin neckboard, the perfect crt it was attached to is basically garbage and unuseable.

Don't have those problems with WG.

I have a few NOS 19" Wells, but not cheap. Yes I said Wells not Vision Pros. Shipping would not be too bad from WI to MN you can use Speedy delivery. They are still in the box from when they were shipped to me.
