Is the Pole Position II PCB any more reliable than 1?

I am having major issues with my Pole Position. Booting in test mode more often than not, plays OK for the first race, then second race steering goes out completely. Sometimes resets mid-race, sound FX come and go, sometimes won't register credits, you name it. I know this boardset was engineered wrong. Would I be better off just installing a Pole Position II logic? This machine is really pissing me off.

Sounds more like your board either isnt getting enough power, and/or you have loose/dirty connectors, probably sockets too. Check those first and keep it simple.

So do you think if I shot out the JAMMA connector with some compressed air and cleaned the contacts on the boards I might be good?

The machine should be good on power; it's the only thing on a high-end, gently-used surge protector.

Power going in is only one small part of the equation and 9.9 times out of 10 is not the issue. Gently cleaning the connectors could help, so I would start with that. Next, check the voltages going into the connector with a multimeter to be sure the boardset is getting supplied with enough power to continue running. Pole Positions are notorious for several issues, and the power supply PCBs (Or ARII) boards are one of them. If you havent done this before, post in the Technical Repair forum, tons of people here like myself would be more than happy to help you.

There is nothing JAMMA in a Pole Position and Pole Position II boards are nearly identical so they have all the same problems.

From your responses I am going to guess you don't know much about the DC power in arcade games, so that is something you should read up on.

And you will need a multimeter.

Pole Position and Pole Position II ARE the same boards.......only real difference......with Pole Position II, they managed to cram a few more IC chips onto the platform.

Pole Position I boards can be converted to PPII by adding sockets and ROM's.

Have you done the power mods?
Edge connectors good?

Pole Position is one machine NEVER to leave stock. I know there are a lot of "gotta be original" collectors out there. But PP was seriously flawed in the design stage. Easily correctible using well documented MODs. A big switcher is a must in this machine (20A+ on the 5v supply!!).

Fun game, don't give up on it.
