Is the game play on NBA JAM and NBA Showtime similar?

Just as title states. Was thinking about getting an upgrade to NBA Showtime for my new NFL Blitz 99 machine. Does anyone know how different the two are? NBA Jam Vs. NBA Showtime

If you're wondering if the two are different enough to have both, I believe they are and would gladly own an NBA Jam to go with my Blitz/Showtime.

Some things that are different:

NBA Showtime has about 5 players on each team to choose from for a 2 vs 2 game. The Pacers have Reggie Miller, Jalen Rose, Mark Jackson, Chris Mullin and I think Sam Perkins. Basically, the roster for the team that went to the Finals against the Lakers.

Fouls are called when you push a player down. Free throws are shot once a team is in the bonus from too many fouls.

There's a few other things I'm forgetting, but I say it's worth it.

Thanks that's exactley what I was wondering. Are these hard drive games more of a pain than regular boards?

They are very different IMO. I prefer NBA Jam but that's cause i have memories of it

JJ,

Not sure if you have older consoles (PS1, Dreamcast, etc), but Showtime was available for them, and is a direct port of the Arcade. If you want to go the cheap route, pick up a copy off of Amazon and check it out.

Personally, I liked Showtime, but I played the shit out of it in the dorms on my DC.

Thanks for the input jow.

I have both NBA Jam TE and a Showtime/Blitz Cab and I prefer the NBA Showtime over the Jam. The Jam is more 2 diminsional and the Showtime has more 3d effects and looks to it. I also think the 49way sticks are smooth and quite. More hidden features, hotspots on the floor, Outside Courts, and just more goodies in general. I enjoy the Jam for its nostalgic feel "Boom Shaka Laka" and sounds but the gameplay is just better on Showtime IMO. Also, the create a character feature and being able to earn and pump your characters stats on Showtime is a big bonus if you are going actually own the machine.

Do what I did, Yank the HD and create an image of it. chdman.exe from the latest mame. I got a 4 step toutorial on my home pc that explains how to back up your arcade HD. I can post that later if anyone is interested along with the chdman file. Once you have the image you can always re-image it later or to a totally different HD if you need to. My Sportstation runs off a drive I imaged and I have the original stored on the shelf.

Cool. Please post that. Thanks alot.

Just FYI, There are issues using the CF cards with the Vegas system. You will need a 16GB card(Sportstation 3.0), and im not sure what brand CF card and adapter works, I have tried several with no luck. All of my Seattle CF cards work fine and my Area51 CF cards work, and my KI cards as well, but for some reason the Vegas system doesnt like CF cards. I have tried Gauntlet LEgends, Dark LEgacy, War and the Spotstation with no luck, so if you do get one to work please post the brands you used please!

Ok, here ya go.. Bottom of the guide explains how to backup the HD as well..

Can I use chdman to put a CHD file back onto a hard disk?

Yes you can, at least under Windows. You have to be logged in as administrator, and you have to know which physical volume your target hard disk is mapped as. The easiest way to do that on Windows XP and later is to right click on My Computer and select Manage from the menu. In the Computer Management window, in the tree on the lefthand side, select Disk Management. That will show you a list of all the physical hard disks you have plugged in. They will be listed as "Disk 0", "Disk 1", etc. Make a note of which disk number your target hard disk is.
Once you've done that, it's easy to "image" the CHD file onto the disk. Just use the following syntax:

chdman -extract imagename.chd \\.\PHYSICALDRIVEn

where "imagename.chd" is the name of the CHD file, and the "n" next to PHYSICALDRIVE is the disk number you figured out above.
This technique has been used by several people to restore dead hard drives on arcade games.

Note: that you can also use chdman to create a backup of a hard disk image in much the same way: 1-1 rule = The image you create must be put back onto a drive of equal or larger size.

chdman -createhd \\.\PHYSICALDRIVEn imagename.chd

Visit: http://www.revisionx.com/kiproject/chdman.html to download Chdman and to get a full walkthrough guide. There is alot of mombo Jumbo here that can confuse you but what I posted above is truly all you need to comprehend. A couple of very simple command lines and the 1 to 1 rule.

You dont need to have a drive the same size, you can use a larger drive if needed. ( I use newer 20gig drives now since most of the smaller drives are old and failing in all the kits I sell)
execptions would be games like Killer Instinct, that cant read larger than 4 gig drives, but there arent many games that have that issue. (KI1 - 256 mb will work, and KI2 - 512 mb)

*edit He already mentioned larger drives will work, so my post was dumb LOL

I thought I sent you the info on what CF setups were working with the Vegas boards...

Someone here figured it out... pshayes, I think, and he got Gaunt Legends working on a 4gb CF I think.

Last time I talked to him he didn't have a card big enough for GDL but that may have changed.
