is it worth rebuilding a dead switching power supplY?

I pulled one that registered zero volts from every position last night and replaced it with a new one in my gyruss.

I haven't pulled these apart before. Is there a fuse that blows inside of these?

worth attempting a fix or rebuild?

I know they are only like $25 from bob roberts, so I would not want to put more than 30 minutes into working on this thing.

dump it :)

I save anything I can get my hands on. And I say get a new one. Spend your time fixing a good monitor. Don't waist time on a switcher. That's just me. I like the way a game works with a new power supply. I did do it one time and after I spent all the time finding the parts. I should have just got a power supply from Mr. Roberts. I hate to say it but you can't save it all :)

dont waste your time..

folks like ken will save em all..

but with the 3 ive tried to resurrect only 2 lived and ive probhably got 6 hours in them and $40-50 worth of parts....

so when youc na get new ones for $20-25 each, and used ones randonly for like $5-10 it makes more sense to just chuck em and replace with new/used

i do save the screws tho.. sometimes you get used ones later missing screws etc....

You can fix most dead switchers for about $7 in parts. New ones are $25. How much is your time worth to you?

I fix 'em most of the time. I've got maybe a dozen sitting on the shelf all fixed and ready to go. Then if we encounter a game with a bad power supply, I swap out the bad one with a rebuilt one. Then I fix the bad one at my leisure. It's been a while since we bought any new power supplies.

I have a stock of capacitors, diodes, and transistors to fix most power supplies.

Of course there are some power supplies that are total crap like "Hi-tron" and "The Great Amusement Emporium" ones that are not even worth fixing. Those I usually strip parts off of and chuck the rest of it.

Usually you just lose a couple transistors and maybe a diode. Replace them, a fuse, and about 6 caps and your done...

Like a moron, I wasn't paying attention and hooked up the AC lines to +5vdc and ground on my switcher...........SNAP! It blew the fuse in the power supply...I replaced it...but it blew again.

I'm thinking my power supply is toast.

Now that would have done considerable damage! In this case it probably would not be worth even bothering with.
