Is it really possible to get 10k points on the first level of DK?

I heard that Steve Weibe tries to get 10k points on the first level of DK. Is this really possible? I have been trying like mad lately and the best I can do is 8,000 and some change. I really don't think it's that possible. Is it? Been really trying to break 200k the last few weeks and I just beat my personal best, my high score is now about 174k. So close. Really trying to rack up points earlier in the game. Anyways, just wondering.

I can't seem to do it either ... I can't even get to 9k on the first screen.

But my scores are creeping up a bit with some of the point pressing techniques I learned from watching Steve try to break the World Record on Justin.TV

Currently sitting at 184,500 ....

10K, yes it is possible. I thought I remember someone saying Billy got close to 14K once on the first board. I've hit over 9k a few times (2-3), but I typically don't point press, because I wind up dead!

I would imagine this has something to do with the difficulty setting. The harder its set, the more barrels to jump over and smash for more points.

True, but didn't different boardsets have a variance in difficulty?

Yes, I believe there was an OP MOD that made the game harder. But, the stock boards that TG looks for has only one difficulty setting. So...

You can score a lot of points by grouping the barrels then jumping them all on multiple tiers. It is kinda fun, but I usually die pretty quick. I try for 7000 on the first board.

It's fun to try and get 10K on the first board but to be honest, it's probably best to try and go straight through as fast as you can.

Unless you know you can make it to the kill screen, there's really no need to point press. I usually go straight through as fast as I can and get 80-90k by the end of the third elevator. After that, I've lasted until 142k (Edit: Got 191,900k tonight. ARGH!). I think Steve Wiebe's advice to gamers after his E3 attempt, was to try and get to the top as fast you can and don't worry about point pressing.

Using MAME save state for fun, I got 880k getting to the kill screen. So until I know I can make it there for real, then I won't really try point pressing. Then again, it's good to work on technique.

that looks pretty cool, gonna have to try that tomorrow. I usually try to go thru the levels pretty quick, that would give me practice jumping anyway

now what is people's thought on using the lower (first) hammer when point pressing??? it seems like whenever i do it, i get bottlenecked with barrels and usually die pretty quick, then if i just zip up to the top and only use the top hammer.

6,200 is my record. I watched him do around 7,500 when he went for the record last time. I just blow through it because 120,000 is not a threat to anyone right now.

Using the bottom hammer takes a lot of practice. I was playing 20k point games for a long time using it. Last week, I finally broke 100k using both hammers. After that, I played just using the top hammer, and scored 225k. It is good for practice since you need to jump a lot more barrels, but if I am trying to improve my high score, I just use the top hammer. I agree that unless you can reach the kill screen, you really don't need to worry about point pressing much. I don't know if I will ever reach it, but I'll keep trying.

Point pressing can be extremely frustrating to say the least. I've gotten about as high as I can get without pressing, so that's the way I've been trying to play lately. I agree that you should avoid the bottom hammer if you're trying to reach the kill screen. I do think that it's excellent practice to get the bottom hammer though. You will play the barrel boards a lot better and you'll be able to get out of tricky barrel situations more often. Point pressing on L1-L4 is harder due to wild barrels and the relative difficulty in controlling the barrels. There's really no risk when pressing the first level since all you have to do is restart if you die.

I get over 10k all the time on the first board.

The secret - die a few times near the top. :D:D:cool:

Hahaha, I had to answer a call at work while I was reading this... almost couldn't answer the phone because I was laughing too hard. :)
