personally I really respect this guide that Exity has put together with some differences for region and popularity for some newer JAMMA machines.

http://www.arcade-classics.com/price_guide.html

I think he's more accurate for classics and a little low for JAMMA but generally this is a good starting point.

There seems to be more price checking than normal lately... or is this completely just my imagination.

Yeah, I've noticed it a lot lately. Heck, I even asked about the Super Street Fighter (which isn't in his guide).

I've noticed it's a lot of newer people. or people with low post counts. I'm guessing they just come here looking to sell their stuff, and want to get a feel of how much we are willing to pay.

edit:
I guess he says "Street Fighter II (any)" which is a starting point, but considering the variences I have seen in prices, I still am glad I asked.

I really think we need a Price Check section to unclutter the general stuff. This will me price check searches easier.

I am new to collecting and have definitely thrown a price check or two out there. It's hard just starting off not knowing what is an acceptable price vs unacceptable.

It has definitely picked up over the last couple of weeks. Exidy's guide is pretty good, but there are several games that don't appear on there. I put out one last week or so for Robby Roto, but never really got any numbers on it. I picked up a really nice condition one, but really had no idea what was reasonable. Exidy had it at 100-200 which seemed really low for very rare midway game from 81. I hear the game play is not great, but the cabinet is very unique and kind of reminds me of Satan's Hollow.
I always think it is odd when you see very common games asked about though, which seem to have been popping up lately. I like seeing the posts as it helps all of us assess things, but it should have its own sticky or section I think.

It definitely isn't your imagination. Worthiness of the guide aside, I think it could be a helpful repository if anything. Digitpress adopted creating a what's it worth forum and it seems to work fairly well.

People are still gonna ask about random Neo Geo conversion cab worth, but at least it's more organized and in one spot. :p

it's really a big clutter to the main discussion area. I hope that it can be moved all to it's own section.

it's interesting to price guide the stuff that you know about but then again there's just been TOO much lately of this stuff and often times of very common stuff that anyone doing some research could find out.

the other thing is that clearly that there are some very cool new folks around just learning and breaking into the hobby/community. Others on the other hand are all about the Biz and think of this as a place to get only help from seasoned folks and to just get top dollar from their items. IMHO this doesn't do anything for the great community that I found here.

His guide only applies to the area he is in, and it's WAY off base on a few titles (in my area).

Price checking can give you a general idea, but it depends again on your area.

If you can find dozens of the same machine in your area, you are likely not going to get the higher end $ average for the machine that people will give you when you ask for a price check here.

If you live in an area where they are impossible to find and you've never seen one for sale, so you shipped yours in from out of state, you're more likely to get that higher end or more.

Price checking only gives you a VERY rough idea. I'd bet the influx of price checks, are from people not in the CA area or other places where vids are very common to be found.

I don't think price checks are necessary. A game is worth to you what you are willing to pay for it. There is no such thing as over paying. If a seller isn't selling at that price, move along. Simple, right?

How about try searching??

Why not just search for prices? By the time you write up a new thread, ya could have just used the search field here or googled it.. Just laziness..

No need for a separate section, as that's why we have a For Sale thread..

I think a lot of people ask for price checks so that they aren't bombarded with comments like "If they were priced in line with today's economy" and such crap like that.

And googling for prices, you wind up with a TON of retail results and overpriced Craigslist morons wanting $3500 for a Pac...
