The last true Game Boy, as far as I can tell, was the Game Boy Micro. I have read that Nintendo does not consider the DS as a Gameboy because it is not backward compatible with all gameboy games, and I believe I read somewhere that Nintendo is adament about the fact that if they're gonna call it "game boy" then its gonna read all their games from the original black and white all the way up to the newest GB advance games. But now, it looks like Gameboy is retired, and may never come back. What do you think will become of the Gameboy nameplate?

Who knows. The 3DS offers original GB games in its Virtual Console, so at least they're still there.

true but its not the same i would rather have to switch cartridges

Right, but in my own opinion, there's no reason to continue developing hardware with what is essentially a dead format. If you want to be able to play all Game Boy carts, then get a GBA SP.

When they first announced the DS they were saying it was going to be a new system, not related to the GB, and would not take it's place.

I think that was just so they could fall back on the GB if the DS failed.

No offense, I loved the GB line, but I have to agree with Matt here.

You can't expect gaming companies to keep the same format or product line forever. They'd go out of business or struggle to keep up (Ex. Sony's Playstation). It's all about innovation and keeping things fresh.

Hence, the announcement of the Wii-U now that Wii sales are at an all-time low. It's a business strategy that we shouldn't be surprised about.

Hell I think it's damn impressive that they supported backwards compatibility as long as they did - especially for cart based media. The GBA line supported GB and GBC games up until the Micro and the DS and DSlite supported GBA games. Hell, that was pretty awesome of Ninty if you ask me.

Then again, it was probably more of a marketing strategy to keep the software rolling out for that little extra bit of time while introducing a new product.

I completely skipped the GBA and am just now getting to play a lot of those games (albeit on my DSi). Right now I'm about done with The Minish Cap (which I must say is pretty awesome). What are some good GBA games to look for?

Yup, Gameboy name and format is dead and buried. With all the flash carts and fake cart piracy shenanigans that went on with the DS, you can bet that Nintendo will want to get away from the cartridge format to download only as soon as the market will allow.

Astroboy Omega Factor, Mario Vs Donkey Kong, Mario and Luigi Superstar Saga and the Advance Wars games for sure.

Golden Sun, Final Fantasy Tactics and Fire Emblem get good ratings too.

The GBA has some excellent ports from the SNES.

Breath of Fire I and II, Final Fantasy Dawn of Souls (I and II), FFIV, FFV, FFVI, Super Mario Advance (all of them).

Some of the better dedicated games include the two Advance Wars (excellent turn based strategy) The Castlevania games (Aria of Sorrow is my favorite, aside from the cartoonish direction it started in), and there are plenty more, too.

There's so many great GBA games. I'll add to the list Metroid Zero Mission and Metroid Fusion. Also River City Ransom EX,and the Mega Man Battle Network and Mega Man Zero series.

Manufacturing carts is too expensive and now too limiting with the amount of data a lot of modern games use.. there's no way they'd resurrect the old school Gameboy, I wouldn't be surprised if they eventually use the name again though

nothing better than playing Gyruss on your NES GBA :)

I wish they would have put more arcade games out for it...i think i have all of the collections that were made...pretty much all I play on it.
