being a collector of my favorate arcade games and being relatively new to this hobby (almost two years) i have a question. is anyone ever done collecting or is it an addiction for life? p.s. i love it!

I have heard of people getting burned out and quitting but I doubt any collector of anything is ever done until he either quits or dies.

My list of games that I like well enough to want to own, is fairly short. I'd have a hard time thinking of 10, and I already have 4 of them, so I could see myself being done eventually.

I know a lot of people who VERY rarely turn over a game any more and rarely make any kind of change to their gameroom, but they also don't spend time on this forum. Seems linked mostly to how long the person's been in the hobby. 5 years or less, usually still pretty active... 10 years or more, usually low turnover unless it is a business of theirs...

I'm almost there... I am probably only going to get a couple more games and then call it quits. Maybe sell/trade one game per year or so. I do have several things I want to do to the room itself though (paint stripes, new floor, etc.)

I said it before and was called a liar. I had very little exposure to arcades because I grew up on a farm. The games I did play were at a tavern in the smalll town I went to highschool in.

The only game I do not have that I played as a kid is Tron. I am actively seeking one. After that I have a couple machines to restore and to buy a pin for my wife. Then I'm done. Having a gameroom full of games is an awesome feeling but when you have a ton of games that do nothing but eat energy and collect dust then where's the fun in that? Lots of cool people here on KLOV and just make it fun while it lasts.

Pins are definitely something you'll spend time with....not necessarily playing them haha.

?? how so? maybe if you pick up projects but I owned 2 pins for a total of maybe a year. I have had nothing but fun with them and neither required work other than little things I added to them like cliffys post sleeves, new flipper bats and a rubber ring kit.

Start getting into pinball...then you'll NEVER be done.

Fortunately, I couldn't care less about pinball machines. I say "fortunately" because my lack of interest in them saves me a lot of money and space, not to mention headaches (they seem to be higher maintenance than most video arcade machines).

i have about 2 or three games left that i will allow myself to buy and that is it for me unless i find nicer originals of the games i own i dont have a need want or room for more games

Pins are definitely higher maintenance, and the more you play them, the worse it is. Even a completely shopped pin will get dirty and parts will break when you play them a lot. If nicely shopped the dirt isn't as bad as some of us make it out to be, but it's hard to beat a videogame that you just have to Windex every once in a while. :)

That said, I am kindof missing pinball and probably will pick one up again in the future. I've been pinless for about a year now.

At 8 vids and 2 pins, I'm officially out of room in my game room. Now I'm at the point where if I want another game, something's gotta go- at least in my current house.

All that said, am I done collecting? Hell no. I just have to get more picky... Or move :)

Yeah, I'll be done eventually. I'm actually almost there. I told myself that when I get all the machines on my list (Satan's Hollow being the last one), I'm done getting anymore cabinets other than an EDOT. Luckily, I gave myself a way out... so... I'm grabbing everything I can before I find a Satan's Hollow. Even if they machines aren't on my list, I've started grabbing them so I'll have something to barter with for later... plus new games pop into my head every now and then... like I'm all gung-ho right now about getting a Ghost 'n Goblins built... But the Satan's Hollow/EDOT clauses are set in stone... when I get SH I'm "done", when I get EDOT, I'l REALLY done.

It's not really much of a big hobby for me I guess... it's just a temporary hobby until I get what I want, then I'll move on to something else... Probably something else from my childhood to I can get geared up for my mid-life crisis. Like those little bendy tube toys that came in happy meals... ...

Never done... until you quit...

I started wanting pacman and galaga...now I have 27 machines... I am considering moving ... one of the criterion is that the house must have a walkout basement, high ceilings, and a huge basement.

Posting here is only going to feed the urge to buy. Stay away from craigslist the monkey is hard to get off your back.

After nearly 600 games, and 1500+ monitor chassis rebuilds i would say i'm about done, i'm tired, i'm burnt out and after a few more restorations, i'm done. Both feet are in the grave on this hobby and gravity is pulling hard.

I'm out of space, and I have all the games that mean something special to me. I could keep going, and I can see picking up an extra minty specimen of a game that almost made my "gotta have" list, but for the most part, I'm done.

Now I gotta start clearing out those parts that I know I'm never going to use. Guess it's time to read the new guidelines in the FS section.

Yes and no.

I have a list with multiple tiers. I have most of the ones in my top tier. But if I had more room (like the guest room, we have two couches in the living room!), I'd start in for the ones on the second tier. If I had even more room (we don't need a piano, just buy the kids a keyboard!), I'd get the ones in the third tier, and so on and so forth.

So I'm close to done now, but if I get more room, I'm not done. :D

Even if I get full up, I'm going to try to switch one or two out every now and then, just to keep things interesting.
