Is anyone else sad about the end of Midway Games???

This has been a long time coming. The economy gloom was the death knell for Midway, however. I've been down on Midway (Midway Games West) ever since they offloaded all the Atari property back in 2003. Don't get me wrong, I'm thrilled to have picked up as much as I could to save it from the dumpster, but that was the end of Midway right then and there (for me, anyway).

I think the day Atari bit the dust was much more sad. Midway....ehh... buh-bye! At least it's been put out of it's misery. Ok, so who's going to snap up the name and repro parts for Midway? Let's get down to business. :)

I think it's tragic and the end of an era. :(

It was a sad day - I think even more tragic is the law suits they keep getting hit with.

EDIT: Now seeing what Daviea said - I agree 100% seeing Atari go down was much worse.

I'm crying on the inside. All of the great Chicagoland companies are gone.

i agree about atari, too.

And midway is a shell of its former glory, since i never cared about the MK's either.

But MrH is right. All the great chicago companies are gone. Chicago Coin, Williams, etc etc etc.... Gary Stern, please stay in business! Without you, all we have is a crappy slot machine company.... :(

Stern Pinball's still there!

But seriously - what has Midway done that's been even remotely interesting since MK2? I'm amazed they lasted this long!

Their "next gen" games always had an ugly, blurry, choppy look and feel to them...they never had the visual excellence that their rivals (Sega, Namco, Capcom, Konami) had in the mid/late 90's and onward.

Not really sad about it, they've pretty much not done anything i've been interested in a looooong time.

I've always felt that if Atari held out and didnt sell to Miday/WMS at the time they might still be around. Area 51 and Rush were just coming out and those two games were HUGE hits for Atari. But, it was too late.

Agreed. It was too little too late, unfortunately. Don't get me wrong... it's sad to see Midway go, but in reality they "went" a long time ago. All that was left was just a name and some sorry titles, so I'm not too hurt over seeing them put out of their misery--finally!

Too bad the arcade industry as a whole is where it's at now. I don't even recognize it anymore.

The problem is, they haven't found a way to stay relevant. Why go out somewhere to play games when better versions are available at home? Arcades were cool when the technology was superior to the home version....that was the reason to go - to get an experience you couldn't have at home.

Thats it in a nutshell. The only people interested in the games are people of our generation that now want to relive our youth..teens today could care less..the games they play are so far advanced from what we played that there isn't the interest other than the typical novelty factor which wears off after a game or two when they become bored...seems like todays generation needs constant wow factor or they get bored to quick..

If they re-made MK with digitized graphics instead of the CG crap they've been putting out then they would have been profitable a long time ago. I want MK9 to be digitized with 3d sprites and backgrounds but a 2d fighter a la SFIV. This would be so awesome they would sell a million pre-orders before they even finished the concept sketches.

Who really cares - the true arcade era died decades ago. All of these companies are shells of their former greatness - just logos at this point.
