Ghosts & Goblins? No matter how hard I try, I can't even get to the end of the first level. It's so damned hard that I can't say I even remotely enjoy this game. Is it just me or is anyone actually good at this game?

I know I played it on the NES as well, and it was maybe a little easier but I don't think I ever got too far in it either. Just not fun.

I hate to ask this, but did you read the instructions?

I found Reactor was hard, but once I read the instructions, it started to click and I got through nearly all the levels.

Practice more by playing Ghouls 'n Ghosts. :)

Yes. Still very difficult. The only time I've gotten anywhere is by playing it in mame with cheats enabled, just so I could see what the next few levels looked like :)

It's an extraordinarily tough game. I beat it on the NES. It took me several hours to get through it. I wouldn't say it's necessarily patterns but you do learn the order in which things pop up, best way forward, etc…Lots of repetition means lots of play. Kind of the mindset back then I suppose.

It is absolutely one of my favorites. I can beat the game, but only with free play of course. I love it and its younger sibling, Ghouls N Ghosts. I own a physical Ghosts N Goblins and love it, but I have never even seen a physical Ghouls cab.

Do forgive my insensitivity, but my wife and I joke that it is one of my "stim games" that I can sit and devote hours of focus to like a savant.

I have yet to break 1 million points on it, but I have practiced enough to where I can loop it with minimal trouble now. There's definitely a number of tricks/strategies/glitches I use/abuse to gain the upper hand that I'm not sure I could do without, primarily rapid fire shots by mashing the joystick between neutral and a direction and farming points on stage 3 to get an extra life.

Here's a recording I made of one of my playthroughs.

I think you just have to grind away at it. I tend to wear out just before level 3 but I'm sure if I put the time into it I could break through. You really need to learn the nuances of certain parts of the game and that required tons and tons of play to figure out the best strategy. There are various things you can do to make your life easier, like exploiting the scrolling so you can avoid fights.

@neSneSgB 's video is amazing! I've always preferred the dagger due to speed, but that's a carry-over from my NES playing. He uses the shield in the later stages and I can see why. And I've never seen the point-pressing strategies he's using. Very cool.

It is brutally hard though, especially the arcade version. I find Ghouls and Ghosts much easier by comparison.

Thanks, I switch to the shield in stage 4 because unlike the NES version, there's no definite shield drop spot in the arcade version, and since you need it at the end of stage 6, I found that grabbing it from those little enemies on the bridge is a surefire way to make it appear.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but don't you shoot faster if you press the fire button and then repeatedly push the joystick towards the thing you are shooting at, allowing the joystick to bounce to the center between each push? (Similar to DIg Dug to pump faster?). I can't remember if that's on the Arcade version or the NES version.

Very helpful if you are looking to shoot those guys that charge at you on the ladder platform part of the level.

I used to play both the Arcade and NES versions A LOT! I got 1.5 mil in the arcade. About 1 mil came from milking the cave until I died. It stops giving free men after 1 mil so you can't milk it all day. I think the controls are what take the longest to get good at. Even when you know how to handle certain enemies or bosses, overcoming the controls seem to be an issue for many. Learn that and the rest wasn't to hard.

Good video. You make it look so easy!

The farthest I've gotten is the end of the third stage. The demon guys are so damn unpredictable…

Yet I can totally kick the sequel's ass.
