Is a white (6502) CPU worth anything?

I got contacted through VAPS by someone wanting to know if I had a white CPU in my Night Driver that I am restoring. This is getting strange...Was it these two $300 and $400 auctions that have people coming out of the woodwork? No, I didn't reply...my Night Driver restore is still ongoing. At least it will be once it warms up!

Yeah, this is weird, I recently had some early Atari pcbs for auction and some guy asked me for the numbers on the cpu of one of the boards and I basically said what the chip was and didn't have the board in hand to examine the cpu. Why the hell would anyone care.

Some of the chips were made with a decent amount of gold so that would up the value a bit with gold being over $1100 for an ozer. :p

I too got contacted through VAPS because of a white CPU I have on an Atari Dominos PCB, the guy didn't even care that I am in Germany and would have paid shipping plus whatnot. I kept it anyway...

There's a guy doing a run of reproduction Apple 1 main pcb's.. so now those in that hobby that are just as fanatical about their restorations as we are about ours are out to find just the right revision of every component that goes on that blank main pcb.. In the case of an apple 1, it's this white chip so they are scrambling looking to find them.

I finally sent the CPU to the guy for $15 so hopefully that will give me some good Karma. He is using it on an Apple 1 repro and is supposed to send me a picture.

Most people think we are nuts for our arcade game obsession so isn't it hypocritical to think this guy is nuts for valuing a white 6502 for his obsession? :)

Yep, that's what's going on. Although in my case, I bought the Apple I repro kit in early 2006. I've been looking for a white 6502 ever since. I haunt eBay from time to time hoping to find one, but I haven't yet seen one there. The board looks pretty good (link to pic), but it would look better with a white rectangle on it. :)

I don't want to hijack a thread, but if any of you happen to have a functional white 6502, and would part with it for a fair sum, I would appreciate it.

Thanks!

Sorry about reviving this thread from the dead, but it was me who was looking for that white 6502 and I did promise to share a picture of it when it was finished, so here it is.

You may or may not have an appreciation for all the effort that has gone into this project, but if you take a good look you'll see that there are only two chips on here that were made after 1976 (1978 & 1979). It's been a long project, but I am really proud of the result.

So what do you think? Am I as nutty as you thought? Probably... :)

Unfortunately the image is no longer available (404). I am still interested to see the resulting board. I'll drop you an email too, Cameron.

And yes, you are a nut. Just about something different than me. :)
