Is a Donkey Kong and DK Jr. cabinet the SAME?

Here is my question: Are the control panel dimensions, marquee, bezel and other dimensions critical with regards to the artwork the same? I am interested in building a multi-DK using my Arcadeshop board (which has DK, D2K, DK Jr. and DK3 on it), and since I am a stickler for quality, I figure I should just find an empty cab and paint it red "Radar Scope" style and use original style DK artwork. I recently ran across an empty DK Jr. cabinet which would be ideal for such a conversion, but I don't know if all of the DK parts will work???

Also, is there a specific paint code/brand for re-creating the "radar scope" red coloring, or possibly even a vinyl kit to re-cover the cabinet in the correct color available? Thanks in advance...

Yes on all counts. Contact Rich at this Old Game for the vinyl kit. I used it on my DK3 Resto:

IMO if you're putting DK art on it, I think blue is better. DK and DK Jr. don't look right in red cabs...3 does, but not those 2. Jr I've seen in Orange yes, but it still doesn't look right with the blue art it has.

I respectfully disagree with the above poster, and wholeheartedly agree with the above above poster's choice on DK3 color :D

It's personal of course, but I feel Donkey Kong looks best in red (and believe the art was created for a red cabinet, as a retrofit, such was the game itself); Donkey Kong Jr. best in blue (and similarly designed for blue as a retrofit, orange coming as an afterthought, likely for Mario which ended up going widebody); and Donkey Kong 3's color scheme is clearly designed for red, regardless of what cabinets N* slapped some into or still had laying about on the assembly line (orange).

Incidentally, it is also my personal belief that the blue cabinet color itself was designed and intended for Miyamoto's true love and brainchild at the time : Popeye. Which was famously backburnered due to licensing issues and subsequently put off in favor of the unexpected Kong successes.

Where/when did the orange come into play?

UNFORTUNATELY, the cabinet had been picked up by someone else before I could get to it. Guess I will just have to put it on my list of things to look into once I put a dent in my MANY other projects that are still in process. Thanks for all the input!

I looked for that board on arcadeshop.com and couldnt find it. Are they still available? Got a link? I want one!!!

When has that ever stopped you? :D

I didn't know that! Every Donkey Kong I have seen has the vents painted black. I assumed Donkey Kong 3 was the same.

All of mine are bare wood. They routed the slots but left the inside natural. The inside of your speaker grill should be bare wood as well. If not, somebody painted it after it left the factory.

Interesting, I don't think I ever noticed any nintendo cabinets with bare wood. If I ever get a DK I wonder if I will natural.

By 'inside' I meant the backside of that board that the speaker and black grill actually screw in to. The back side of the kickplate is bare as well. They only painted black in the inside parts of the cab that show (and slightly beyond). There is actually a perfect mask line where the black paint stops and the natural wood starts inside the machine.
