iPhone/iPad - Progressive Web App Increased Compatibility

"I can't use this feature. It doesn't work with my phone!"

Count me amongst the old phone crowd. I have an iPhone 6 plus. (Which replaced my 4S a couple of years ago, when it finally died.)

If an app (or site) doesn't work on my phone, I don't need it. And when you run old equipment, you come to appreciate how much technology you DON'T need.

Every site is based on addiction models of 'engagement' now. Hijacking your attention with dopamine hits, via the little slot machine in your pocket. Does anyone *really* need a push notification to instantly know that someone posted something here (on top of on-site notifications AND emails)? No.

Websites aren't designed solely to display the bare minimum required information. A lot of what's here is for convenience and streamlining, which is how it should be. The design has to evolve. These changes will keep a steady stream of new people signing up, which keeps the forum active and means more donations to the "museum" AKA personal collection. Win-win for everyone :)

I have notifications turned on for my bank. Now I get texts all the time from them. Sometimes I wonder if I should shut them off.

I too used my iPhone 4S up to the minute it just wouldn't work any longer. I got a 6s and absolutely hated it.

I've been using refurbished iPhone SE's - (basically an updated 5) I'm currently on my third or fourth SE - they are like a hundred bucks on eBay.

There a few reasons these SE's will be my last iPhones:

-Home button (F Face ID)
-Headphone Jack!! (I don't think Steve would have taken that away)
-FLUSH Camera Lens (and I think Steve would have HATED how it sticks out on newer ones)
-Square edges (I use the level app a LOT)
-Not ridiculously sized.

No thanks. Not a fan of notifications at all. In fact, 99.9% are disabled on my phone except house security suite and text notifications from my wife and son.
What?!? You mean we hooligans here don't rate high enough for you to be notified of our every foolish move?? I'm offended that you hint at a life outside of KLOV. :ROFLMAO:

I'm 100% with you.

I actually thought about the SE, since it's the closest design to the 4S (which was the last beautifully designed phone ever made IMO). The only reason I have a 6S is because someone gave it to me for free.

I can barely tolerate the size of the 6S. I could never do anything bigger. I picked up my dead 4S the other day and was like, 'Holy shit I miss how good this feels in my hand'. I loved the smaller size, because I could navigate one-handed, and tap anywhere on the screen with my thumb. You can't really do that on the 6S, without a balancing act. And the 4S felt nice in your pocket, and didn't feel like a goddamn surfboard.

Once I got used to the annoying differences (which are mostly iOS related), the 6S has been usable. It's ugly but functional. It does everything I need it to, and doesn't feel slow at all. And I have to say it's well built. It's been durable as hell, I've dropped and knocked it around plenty. And I honestly don't know how the battery in this thing is still going. I had to put a new $6 battery in my 4S every 18 months or so, once it started losing capacity and/or swelling. But I've been using this 6S for 2+ years, and it was at least 2-3 years old when I got it, and it still holds a solid charge.

But yeah, we passed peak phone a long time ago. As with every tech product now, companies just keep adding shit because they need to continuously keep adding shit, to keep milking people for money. None of it is necessary. Four fucking cameras on a Samsung? And 108MP? All so people can send and upload huge pictures, which fill memory, make sites slower and are 10x bigger than the screen? Please.

I find it hilarious that the latest iPhone is the *14*, and the 6S is still perfectly usable. It's all gotten ridiculous, and in no way a better user experience. But as long as people keep being told otherwise, most of them will keep believing it.

I'm personally looking forward to the iPhone 15 IF it as USB-C as it is rumored to have. The Lightning connector I don't care for and have had many broken cables over the years. My day job requires me to be on the phone for a significant part of the day and I like the big screen as my eyes no longer want to cooperate with 'small'. I get years and years of value from carrying a literal super computer around. The cost/day over that period is negligible. My wife has the 14 and she can be technically 'challenged' at times (if you repeat that I will deny it).. and she was able to get the facial recognition working for her. I'll miss the thumb print reader though. I like current too as well as the stuff from the 80's :p

As far as the push notifications .. so far... jury is still out for me.. I can see me shutting them off on the phone.. I do like them on my desktop however.
