Hey everybody, I just wanted to introduce my friend who just joined the forums. He is an legendary video game collector, I am have been trying for the longest time to bring him to the dark side (arcade collecting). So everyone give a warm welcome to him.

Here is his web site:

holy console hell batman!! is that plastic wrapping i see on most of those console boxes?

Yes, as I said "He is an legendary video game collector". Amazing stuff. You see the 80's Donkey Kong Plushie he has? I bet you guys would kill to have that on your DK cabinet!

Man that is one amazing impressive collection!!! He is going to have to make some serious room though once he starts moving full sized cabs in there....

Thanks Tighe.

I mostly collect for the console, but since they have close tie-ins I like to collect arcade stuff that I have room for.

As far as that picture goes, it's a bit outdated (2004). I've added another 6+ years of stuff. :p

I'd love to get some nice cabinets and pinball machines, but I don't currently have to room. Some day perhaps..

Holy.....

That is awesome. Quite the imperssive collection. Look at all those boxed sets! This puts my little Atari 2600/Sega Genesis collection to shame. :D

hehe

I try to keep everything bagged or covered to avoid scratches, etc... I use plastic wrap around the larger boxes that I can't find large enough polypropylene bags

You have to see his collection in person! BTW you have to let me know when I can bring over your X-mas presents! :D

Welcome to the forums, Spoonmanx. Nice console collection.

Being the classic console copier man I am, I think I may know you from IRC... PM if you know what a SWCDX/2 is ;)

Coming from the console world myself, I can tell you it is hopeless to resist the arcade temptation. There are (arcade) games you simply cannot play in their original form (or at all) on a console. Resistance is futile, you will be assimilated :)

Thanks! And yes I do own quite a few console copiers. I used to be an op in #snes (efnet) from '92-to about '04.

My copier/multicart/HK section > http://www.videogameobsession.com/videogame/hk :)

I am able to resist it because I simply don't have the room for cabs living in a 3 bedroom apartment. If I had the space I would buy a few. For now though I can deal with MAME+arcade sticks (Happ parts). Plus I've owned a Neo-Geo AES since '90 and that pretty much IS an arcade machine. :)

So, I guess the collector in question does not actually play on the vintage hardware he/she has acquired? From the flash, most everything appears to be shrinkwrapped: systems, games, peripherals. So they are a strict museum type collector, they never touch it, they just enjoy having it. That I can understand. I think it is a little extreme to shrinkwrap everything though.

If this were ever brought up to be sold, however, that would make buyers very leary if parts of this collection where being sold as new. Hard to tell what is legit new and what has been shrinked after the fact.

It looks like a lot of the games are new/sealed, I guess that was his/her focus for a bit and they didn't waver from it until they got systems where it is literally impossible to get everything complete in the box (like the NES).

It was fun to pick out the systems from the box pictures, like the mini variants, the boxed 2600 in the background, etc.

Anyhow, welcome to the forums. It'll be intersting to see how he/she approaches arcade cabs. All from one manufacturer, or only new in crate machines, or not caring and just getting whatever beater cabs that come along. It'll also be neat to see what era of arcade cabs they'll focus on.

Hi, Thanks for the welcome.

You must have misunderstood. I don't re-shrinkwrap anything. All of my sealed games are in fact factory sealed. I keep all of my boxed games in polypropylene bags, even the new games.
I do this to protect them since I feel it's important to preserve this stuff. You may feel differently.

I am both a collector as well as a gamer. Proof that it is possible to be both! :p

I do prefer to play on original hardware and have most of those boxed systems loose as well. I have a rack of consoles next to my TV.
Here's an example (from '04) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Og8GdySF2-4

I was able to keep many games sealed by utilizing alternative methods of play. Without going into too much detail. I would play cartridge games from back-up units, and later disc based units from backups, etc.

As far as arcade games I like the classics. I grew up playing in arcades of the 70's & 80's so just about anything would make me happy. Though console collecting is my forte.

Thanks spoonman... (just spoonman) :p

There is another spoonman who is quite fond of wrestling. I get some of his messages and often have no idea what they are talking about. hehe
