Hi everyone, I'm pretty new here and thought I'd finally introduce myself. My name is Gene and have owned three cabinets for about ten years now and just recently made two new additions to my micro arcade, an Asteroids and a Missile Command. I find there is something very special about owning these games and as most of you know already, it's kind of addicting! I don't have much technical knowledge at all, so I expect I'll be hitting up the forums here for info in the future.

Now for my question, the Asteroids works great, but I see a small faint circle at the center screen about the size of a pencil eraser. In the center of that circle, there is a small pin dot, that is also faint, with barely visible radiating lines going out to the circle. The circle (and dot) disappear when the high score screen comes on, but seem to be there pretty much the rest of the time.

Is this something to worry about, or just a side effect of old age that's to be expected?

Sounds like the brightness is up to high on the monitor. If you look very carefully do you see very faint lines connecting the asteroids together?

Welcome to KLOV!

Welcome to the madness! Try adjusting the Brightness / Contrast potentiometers on the monitor. They get flakey over time, but you might be able to just adjust it out. Check here for the manuals / schematics: http://arcarc.xmission.com

Awesome avatar! I loved Briscoe County Jr. Oh, and welcome to KLOV... I'm also trying to fix my Asteroids, the monitor is currently dead. Post some pics of your games when you have time.

I had the pleasure of meeting r2084(Gene), good guy.
He came and picked up my missile command cabaret.

Welcome Gene! Hope we can help with all your questions.. or etc. :fing02:

Thanks for the warm welcome everyone! Yup, Brisco County Jr is one of my favs too, wasn't sure if anyone would even recognize the pic! I've now met Tron Guy and jehuie and can tell you, they're both really nice guys. You guys will probably be seeing a lot of me around here in the near future as I have tons to learn. Hopefully I can find everything in the archives so I don't go asking all the rookie questions!

I have the same issue. I can turn the brightness down, but the circle seems to maintain the same brightness as the rest of the objects, so it won't go away.

The contrast pot doesn't seem to affect anything, so maybe it has to do with that?

Thanks!

Welcome to the forums, it is an excellent source for all things arcade, and beyond.

As far as your Asteroids, mine had done that ever since I got it up and running a couple of years ago. But just the other day, the screen went into a "verticle collapse", displaying only a ultra thin verticle line, but the game is still playing. So I have ordered a cap kit for the G08 from Bob Roberts. Hopefully the kit will fix the collapse and the dot... If not, out the door goes the board for an X or Y repair.

Best of luck to you, and happy gaming!

If it`s worth anything , you can do these adjustments at home on your own quite easy , prop a decent 2ft square mirror either on a seat , or on the base of a chair in front of the cab , get to the back of the cab until you can see the monitor in the mirror , then you can see what your adjustments are doing without leaving the back , or having someone there , of course make sure the mirror is secure , no big deal ! .

It won't fix either problem.... Asteroids doesn't use a G08. That's a color vector monitor for a Sega game. Asteroids uses either a G05 or a V2000.

Well, I ordered some TIS98's and they should be here later this week. I'll probably replace them (Q503 and Q506 in the Spot Killer circuit) this weekend, so we'll see if that helps.

This sounds like the spot killer was left on too long and burned this hole in the center of the tube to me. Nothing you did, but previous owners or operators might have left it with the spot killer on and it burned the tube. From what I know, leaving it one burns it pretty quick because it's been concentrated in that spot.

Someone can correct me if wrong, but that's what it sounds like to me.
