I recently took ownership of a Tempest game. It plays and sounds great...for the most part. Here's what happens. Turn on the game, it powers up fine and plays well for about 5-10 min. During mid-play, the screen goes glitchy and the sound bugs out. I shake the cabinet a little and it goes back to the start screen. I press start and it works fine again for about another 5-10 min, then the same thing happens all over again.

Does this sound like a simple fix/replace that someone with a reasonable understanding of basic electrical/electronics can manage?

TIA.

Start by checking all connections and then reflowing all the power supply pins.

The deflection board on the monitor typically needs the pins reflowed too but in this case since your sound also glitched up and not just the image, it's more likely the powers supply or game board edge connectors.

Thanks for the reply scottmaggie. I had someone take a look at it today and they recommended the same exact thing. I'll start by cleaning up the board edge connectors, then move on to the PS pins. Hopefully that clears up the glitch.

Cheers!

Don't clean em, replace em, believe me it will pay dividends.
