Having a really strange problem on a Tempest WG 6100 (I am bench testing it on a Space Duel) but it came from a Tempest.

Monitor was fully rebuilt with Bob Roberts Standard and Additional parts kits, New flyback installed, and LV 2000 Kit installed. Monitor ran great over the last year since it was rebuilt even though I probably only played it a couple of hours tops during that time.

Now the monitor will run perfectly for a few minutes. It will horizontally collapse from the top and bottom to the center of the screen forming a horizontal line. The Spot Killer LED does illuminate on the deflection board when this happens. Sometimes it will go back to normal gameplay, most of the time it will stay collapsed. Eventually the line will fade to nothing. All Cage transistors have been checked, re-checked, and checked again!

Has anyone seen this before? Any suggestions??

Need to reflow the sockets where the wire attaches on the deflection transistors. If its still intermittent push down on the wires where the plug into the deflection board. If that is it replace red connector

Andrew

Check the header pins on P600, and the wiring to Q605/Q606. Cold joints and broken connections are very common here.

All of the header pins were reflowed when I rebuilt the Deflection board. I did flow new solder on all wires on all cage transistors this evening, also pressed and checked red transistor connectors as perI Slackmoe's recommendation still no change. Problem is fairly consistent now. Will work for a few seconds when turned on then willl collapse permanently. Thinking a resistor may be breaking down??

Possibly. Dumb question, but did you check the Y deflection fuse?

I don't pretend to have the experience slackmoe and others in this thread have, but I have seen this before. When the pcb was 'flexed' a certain way the issue would go away. Try pushing on the pcb and see what happens. I had the pcb work for years at a time, but when I pulled it out and it didn't like how it was sitting, similar issue. Push on the pcb and bend it a bit, problem went away.

I never did isolate or try to fix the problem, since the game is working perfectly again, lol.

I've had the exact same issue with a 6100 I've owned in the past.. I also reflowed the header pins, touched up the sockets for the trannies.. Even reflowed the solder to the wires connecting to the sockets..

Well guess what? Those damn wires are old, heat damaged, and brittle.. I found 2 that looked ok, but under closer inspection (I pulled each socket and twisted the wired a bit) a couple broke off without much effort.. One was hanging by a thread..

So now I desolder and cut off the old end, and with a freshly trimmed wire that I know is good, I'll resolder it to the tranny socket..

Just scored a tempest mini and it also had the same damn problem! As the the connectors and trannies will test good.. But not enough voltage is allowed to pass through a thread of a burnt old wire.

Hope this helps. Cut them all, and know they are good :)

Will check those wires tomorrow. I have not tried that yet. Definately not the PCB, i have my Space Duel monitor in the Tempest now and vice versa so that is ruled out and fuses were checked.

Stripped and resoldered every wire on the deflection board and all of the Transistor wires on the cage. Problem seems to be solved but time in the arcade will tell! Thanks to all that helped wih suggestions!!

Kickass!!

Glad to hear that you got the game working right..

Terrific, man. Those deflection harnesses seem to be extremely fragile on the 6100. I haven't seen issues with them on B&W stuff nearly as much.
