I picked up a working Smash TV board set (my second set) that has the Rev 8 ROMS (Pleasure Dome). I hooked it up and now the fire sticks shoot only one direction; down when you push the sticks up.

So I thought maybe something on the board was faulty as I put my other set (Rev 4) in it and they fired properly in all directions.

Although bummed, I went ahead and installed Rev 8 ROMS I got from Arcadeshop in the latter (firing properly) board set... and wouldn't you know it, the sticks fired just as they did with the other Rev 8 board.... down when pushing up only... Put the Rev 4 ROMS back in it and it works properly again..

Anyone know why this is happening?

both the 4.00 and 8.00 rom sets have the same # of roms, so the pleasure dome code must be stored in the game roms. it was like one screen and a 10x4 sprite mod. :p

considering that the right joysticks for P1 and P2 use 4 switches, I'm guessing they use P3 and P4 harnesses? (like MK would have for kick harness or NBA Jam for Players 3 and 4). Riptor had another issue with a UMK3 board not registering one of the buttons ... but it's obviously nothing wrong with the hardware or the Player 3 header if your game works with 4.00 roms.

I'm very confused by this, because I don't remember the Y-unit boards at all right now, and back when my family had Smash TV in the 90's I didn't possess any technical know-how to even fill in the blanks on how it was wired up.

your machine passes the CPU board check right? I've never heard of anything like this. all I can think of is that your 8.00 roms are in fact NOT working properly.

I also hate this primitive ass Test menu the game's got. every game after Smash TV had a Dip Switch Test which shows on-screen what dipswitches are active and what the enabled function is. Smash TV lacks it, like a bastard. gonna have to dig up a manual on arcarc. brb, lol

EDIT: I stand corrected, this game has all the joystick wiring on the JAMMA harness. I wasn't sure cause of it being 4 inputs per player instead of the JAMMA standard 3. there's also no dip switch data even listed in the manual, so... that's why there's no Dip Switch Test! makes me wonder though... if you throw this in a cab that has an unmodified JAMMA harness, do you have to add the extra input pins yourself or something??

25" Dedicated: http://arcarc.xmission.com/PDF_Arcade_Williams/Smash_TV_25in_(16-3044-U1-101)_Apr_1990.pdf (probably explains why the wiring is all on JAMMA)

gonna read the kit one now.

well shit. there are dipswitch settings on the kit. this game had an option for rotary joysticks (I'm thinking like Ikari Warriors?) where you rotate direction with the stick and fire with a button. sounds like it could be your problem! read this manual: http://arcarc.xmission.com/PDF_Arcade_Williams/Smash_TV_Kit_(16-3044-K-101)_Sept_1990.pdf check pages 19 and 57. my mind's loopy from the sinus meds, what's considered "Closed" position on dip switches, On or Off?!

might be nothing, unless by sheer coincidence both your boards have those Rotary Joystick switches enabled. hope so, stupid easy solutions are always great in my book!

Thanx for the insight at this hour! Yea I am running this in a JAMMA cab as have yet to score my prized 25" Smash TV cab..

The wires for "fire" are pins 22, 23, 24, 25 (plus their counterpoints on the solder side for P2) on a standard JAMMA harness, per the manual. I know what you are talking about as far as the rotary stick dip switch setting, which I have seen listed as DP 2; I would imagine that "open" is off and I have tried changing this perameter but no change. I would like to rule the Rev 8 ROMs being bad because I have two sets and I cannot imagine they both have the same issues... though it is possible..

I am simply relagated to no pleasure action... lol..

But wouldn't that affect the board when it is harboring Rev 4 ROMs as well?

I think, chronologically speaking, since the Kit is dated a few months later than the 25" dedicated, that it could contain new features as outlined.

after all, why the heck would the dedicated game need Rotary Joystick support right?

meaning, the 4.00 roms just don't have that. I tried tinkering with it in MAME, I wish I could confirm the behavior but this version I'm running now doesn't have any of the dipswitch data. it's worth noting that Bank 2, Switch 1 is some kind of "Kit Test Menu", I couldn't get that to activate either. it has to be enabled in addition to the Switch 2 "Rotary Joystick" one, which is what tells the board if you're gonna run it in a dedicated or kit form. I think the only difference is just in the joystick behaviors.

I also can't stress enough how much this game has to suck ass with rotary vs. the Robotron style. :)

Good point. I swear I tried dip switch #2 both open and closed but I will do again just for good measure; except that will be tomorrow as I am goood for one final game of Robotron and then crash... :D

I think I read in the manual that you have to do a Full Factory Restore. see if that does anything.
